What kind of loser would protest a former basketball coach in late December by standing outside a private dinner?
It would make us look terrible.
Booing at a game is one thing.
Protesting a private dinner? No way, that's stalker behavior. If this is the extent, I say just overcook his food, give him flat beer and send him on his way.

Who from the University said that it was to be at the game? I think that was created here.
Rudd announced that it would be the 28th and 29th. I'm sure the original plan was to do something at the game. No way to prove that, but that was probably the original plan.
So you think Calipari felt that getting up before a Memphis crowd at the FedExForum was a good idea. I serious think he believed no such thing, for him or the administration. That video would be all over the Internet.

This is and was always the only way Calipari would ever agree to attend in person.

No kidding ... appearing before a crowd of Memphis fans is just dumb on so many levels. But I thought it was true because I read it here. Still haven't learned.

School saw the backlash and decided to change original plans while pretending they never had the original plans. They know they can get handful of loyalist to come to the dinner and be nice little puppets and not protest.
Would be nice to have a picket line in front of the restaurant where it is taking place.

How about every organization on campus. Since it is paid for by University funds i do not see it as private. It is an University function and well within the rights of the fans to protest the event. Unless it is held at Rudd's home with private funds then it is with in the rights of the supporter of the university top protest.

RE: Cal Won't Be Honored At A Game
About face:
Memphis to honor former coach John Calipari
Quote:U of M president David Rudd tweeted Wednesday:
"Will be honoring Hall of Fame coach Calipari in Memphis, Dec 28-29. as the Tigers play Tulane. Stay tuned for details. Will be a great homecoming."
Quote:After many angry Memphis fans responded to the tweet with criticisms about how Calipari abruptly left the program, how he took recruits with him, and how his tenure was mired by NCAA violations, Rudd tweeted back saying he read all the responses and appreciated the passion.

I think you're right about Calipari appearing in front of a Memphis crowd, but I don't think you can know for sure, either way. Rudd's original tweet said he will be honored on the "28th and 29th."
A logical assumption would be a dinner or other function one day, and a game the other.

RE: Cal Won't Be Honored At A Game
I just hope someday in the near future the fanbase can move past the constant obsession with Calipari. We all know the great things he did for us, the crappy way he left and the occasional shot at us since he has been gone, probably because he hears how bad our fanbase hates him. It is time to move on, no one has ever had us closer to our only championship banner in the two major sports, that has to count for something.

There's about a couple dozen here that would.

Yup.
"If Memphis wants to invite the handful of rich and powerful people in Memphis who still like and respect Calipari, who gives a flip?"
and
"If anyone has to "get over" anything, maybe Calipari and his rich pals should get over the reality that Memphians see him for what he is. "
Pretty much says it all.

RE: Cal Won't Be Honored At A Game
What makes the whole thing sad is this could have been handled if somebody simply had a good PR guy.
Image Cal saying this:
"I loved, loved, loved my time at Memphis. There is only one job I would have ever considered leaving Memphis for, and by chance I got it (note: this is a lie, but it'd be nice to hear).
The Memphis fan base was an incredible and passionate group to be involved with and the way they made me and my family feel welcome helped us make an effort to give the city a team they could be proud of.
I've been honored I was able to coach on the same sideline as luminaries like Larry Finch and Gene Bartow and it was a genuine thrill to coach for such a fine city.
You were never the kid's table. That was a quote taken out of context and being a Memphis meant we always had the support, both institutionally and from the community, to compete at the highest level.
While I love my current school, my only regret is that I had to leave such a fine city and fan base before I was able to help their program reach the mountain top.
I will always love Memphis and the role it played in my development. I wish the program and the city the best of luck in their future and am confident in their ability to achieve greatness on a prolonged basis. God bless you all."
And then... scene...
---
A lot of us wouldn't believe it, and it probably would be some lies, but it would give a classy end to that chapter. I'm pretty sure it would help.
It is what it is.

Let him publish that along with a check for $5-10M to the AD and I'll consider it.

Are we so cash strapped that our best move is bringing back the most hated man in the city just so his rich friends donate some money??
