Why the NFL Has A QB Crisis
Interesting article in the Wall Street Journal today. Even though Memphis runs the spread, I just find it hard to believe that this is happening with all spread offense QBs. I would be shocked if Fuente wasn't preparing Lynch for the next level.
But I could be wrong. Thoughts?
This year, according to separate interviews with dozens of NFL coaches and executives, something disturbing happened in these pre-draft quiz sessions. When asked the same basic questions, many quarterback prospects responded with something NFL insiders said they have never seen before: blank stares...
Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said he had the same results when he asked prospects a question about defenses shifting from a common scheme called “cover 2” to an equally mundane tactic called “cover 3.” Hue Jackson, the offensive coordinator from the Bengals, said he had to dumb down his questions, while Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said some QBs failed to grasp things as basic as understanding a common play call. “You have to teach these kids the absolute basics,” he said.

RE: Why the NFL Has A QB Crisis
...because "people" are enamored with "athletic" qb's when the reality is that drop back qb's are still the one's getting the job done.
Outside of Wilson, the QB's that won SB's have been Brady, Brees, E. Manning, P. Manning, Roethlisburger, Rogers, Flacco, Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer.

Even Wilson came from a pro system in Wisconsin just has the wheels the other guys don't

RE: Why the NFL Has A QB Crisis
It's not only the spread offense, but QBs learning the game in general. Hell, if you play Madden of NCAA football games, you know how to tell the difference between cover two and cover three. A lot of QBs nowadays just need to understand the zone read, and be able to get through two receiver progressions.
The dedicated QBs, those that are students of the game, will always be in short supply in the NFL but will be the ones that ultimately succeed. Look at Eli Manning, for Christ's sake. A gigantic mope? Yes. A mediocre athlete? Yes. Ugly as the day is long? Yes. But even though he's not most brilliant mind, he learned the position, and he's got rings to show for it.

Well, really NC State but a pro system nonetheless.

Wilson played at North Carolina State. He only went to Wisconsin after he had already graduated from NCSU; and after NCSU Coach Tom O'Brein tried to get him to concentrate on football in the Spring rather than baseball. So Wilson decided to concentrate on football at a real football school.

NC State has put a couple of pretty good QBs into the pros with Wilson and Rivers, although I think the coaches were different.

Yep. One was Chuck Amato and the other was O'Brien.

They ran pro style at NCSU too when Wilson was there. There just wasn't that much talent around him, but you could see then that he was really, really good.

I've also read that NFL personnel have complained about OLs coming out of college too because of the spread.

I agree, we went through this mobile QB fad back in the Doug Williams and Warren Moon days. Not that any of the above aren't mobile, they just aren't threats to run.
