I have much respect for that.

Memphis deserves better, both coaching and those making the decisions for the program. 07-coffee3

Memphis fans will support a winner but usually only a winner. Basketball is now taking a hit because of that. Football on the other hand seems to be catching on. We'll see in a few years how this plays out.

RE: Memphis announces it plans to honor former coach John Calipari
Rudd has done an outstanding job in his short tenure as president at Memphis, but I think he stubbed his toe here. I'm guessing the overwhelming negative response from many Memphis fans will make him rethink this idea, at least any thought of doing something publicly in Memphis, where Cal is there.

The resentment toward Cal runs deeper than most outsiders realize, and goes way beyond Cal just leaving for UK, which most reasonable fans would understand, in and of itself. UK is a better job.

HOWEVER, many people believe, with good reason, that

* Calipari wrote clauses into our 2009 scholarship LOIs, releasing our recruits to follow him, if he left. The NCAA had to write new legislation negating such clauses.

* Cal delayed announcing his UK decision, which he had already made and told UK, to give himself time to "legally" talk to our recruits, and persuade them to follow him to UK.

* Cal supposedly used the same time to recruit one or more Memphis players to UK.

* He supposedly convinced one of our best remaining players, Shawn Taggart, to leave Memphis a year early, to turn pro.

* He has continued to trash us publicly, for 6 years now. Just a few months ago, Cal said that, at Memphis, he felt he was at the little kids' table, eating with plastic knives and forks.

* Based on comments from some people on and around the 2009 NCAA team, a number of Memphis fans believe Calipari didn't exactly put his best effort into winning the final game against Missouri, so to speak.

Other than that... lol. And the fact we got the entire season vacated, and he got off scot free...

And no, I cannot prove all of this, except the NCAA clause thing and Cal's public derogatory comments toward us over the years, but the others are way more than just rumors in the Memphis fan base. It's certainly enough to fuel resentment from many fans, for a long time.

Aha, didn't see that before I posted the last response. I still think it is inappropriate, but at least it won't cause a riot now. And I didn't see UK honoring Pitino when he was inducted into the HOF.

There's a lot of money to be made by a Memphis fan selling those stickers and t-shirts in Louisville.....

Those would be extremely popular. I know a few uk fans that would love to own one.

Well said Triple A,
In addition, convincing the AD to not go public about the ongoing Rose situation all while negotiating with UK in a Chicago hotel was just plain sleazy. During which time he repeatedly told the media "Memphis is where I want to be."

I, for one, respect Cal as a coach but that whole situation could have been handle much better. As you said (and the point seems to always get lost) most of us get the leaving Memhis for UK at that time or at ANY time was the right move.

another 2008-09 unsubstantiated story was that Memphis had back to back road games at smu and then Gonzaga with 4 days between. the team did not return to Memphis after the smu game, instead remaining in dallas to "save our legs from a lot of flying". the hot story going on at the time was that calipari used that little break away from town to slip off and meet with university of Arizona officals about potentially taking that job. again, just a story built around an unusual change in movements and his knowledge of ncaa sanctions coming down the line. he knew he had to blow town and spent an awful lot of the second half of that season looking for a place to land. he should kiss billy gillespe's Lexington ky liquor connection every morning he wakes up.

Thank you for your kind comments.

For decades, Tiger basketball was one of the few things that a very diverse and divided city/area population would agree on. It was indeed a situation that few university basketball programs were afforded. I think that the maturing of the Grizzlies brand and their on-court success while the Tigers floundered the last couple of years has changed what you observed a bit.

A lot more went on during that season (as I heard it) that convinces me Calipari absolutely looked hard at the Arizona job. I can't recall the timing, though. I also believe he looked elsewhere, including the NBA.

And I agree that BG did Cal a solid by getting fired at the right time. The timing also fuels the Missouri game whispers, b/c if we had played another week in the NCAAs, it's quite possible the UK job would not have been available.

Seems odd that the President would be in the dark about how a majority of Memphis fans would feel about this.

Man if you (or anyone familiar with his coaching style) would go back and replay that Missouri game you will not believe Cal was our coach. First off we gave up 102 points. A defensive-minded Cal-coached team gave up 102 points. His substitution pattern was nowhere near the same as regular season. My clincher that he was on the run to UK was when Doneal Mack missed a down the middle wide-open dunk in crunch time and Cal left him in without yelling or cursing. I knew then we were screwed.

There was stuff that happened before that game, too.

Not to mention, Cal got an early technical, and tried to get the second one, but the ref refused to put it on him. The box score shows 2 bench fouls, though. Not sure either one was charged directly to Cal. But no doubt, he was trying to get thrown out.

RE: Memphis announces it plans to honor former coach John Calipari
I was told by someone that probably had knowledge that Calipari had a $75,000 a year clothing allowance at Lansky's Clothier as part of his 3,000,000.00 plus contract. Reportedly he wore $8,000.00 custom suits. Cal spent the weekend "contemplating" (recruiting) his departure but the Friday before he announced the story is Cal's wife went down to the store and bought almost $50,000.00 worth of close to max out his allowance. Not to mention stealing our snow cone machine and absconding with the nets from our championship games.

Haha. That was one of the plans being discussed by some fans, if they had gone through with this.
