It's like someone, years and years ago, decided that people were only used to hearing games on the radio, so when telecasts came into existence ... they were worried people would be lost without something like a radio voice-over of the game on top of the images.

So that said, I love the "Spider-cam" feed that ESPN offers sometimes on Apple TV. No announcers! Just the game and the stadium sounds.

When I was a kid I think it was NBC did an experimental NFL game without announcers and honestly it sucked. I remember that the Dolphins were one team, can't remember who the second was. My aunt was from Florida and a big Dolphins fan and we watched it at a family function. It was a really hard game to follow because of the lack of information. Of course this was before all the graphics that we have now.

I noticed one of the announcers for the Miami at FAU game said "there are a lot of Miami fans there" instead of "here", so I guess this explains it.

What do you do when you're actually at the game??

You must be one of those people who has the portable radio headphones on, while sitting in the stadium.

To each, his own.

To each, his own.

There are typically stadium announcers who tells you the pertinent information, who made the tackle, who the penalty was on, etc.

And the only time I listen to the radio is at halftime.

FS1 has baseball on when I checked on Saturday. They are not putting a focus on college football. Can you imagine ESPN having a baseball game on Saturday during college football season?

That is the real issue IMO.

OK ... so include the PA announcer on the telecast too. Didn't I already include that under "stadium sounds".

The point is: there aren't two blathering mouths, constantly running (regardless if something is happening or not) when you're at the stadium. Why should there be during a telecast??

That's my opinion.

Comparing a grand slam tennis match to a baseball game is hardly similar.

If FS1 wants to be a college football destination they need to have football on Saturdays. They don't seem to be fully committed to college football IMO. Same with Nascar.

This week FS1 has German Soccer in the morning, college football at 11, 2:30, and 9:30. A MLB game at 6. That is solid mix and lineup of sports.

Great memory. It was 1980 from what I remember. Jets at Miami. A game on a Saturday, so it was either Week 15 or 16. And yeah, there were no graphics so it was tough to keep score. The Orange Bowl PA guy hammed it up a bit. I think the game got good ratings because of the novelty, but fans didn't like it. NBC to me was the top sports production network (i could gush about their college hoops telecasts too), and it was cool that they tried this.

NBC had some great announcers back then, so they were taking the mike away from greats like either Don Cricqui or Charlie Jones or Marv Albert or Dick Enberg.

The previous Dolphin game might've been their famous Monday night game the night John Lennon was shot... when the Patriots were choking away another playoff spot... Miami blocked a John Smith 30 yd FG to send it to OT, one of 17-18 straight Pats losses in the Orange Bowl. Tough growing up following Boston sports back then. Miami and NY had off years in 80, so the Joe Cribbs* led Bills were the team to bump out New England.

* just looked it up... the Auburn backfield in 79 had Joe Cribbs, future Falcon All-Pro William Andrews and future Charger all-purpose back James Brooks. Wow.

** the AFC was covered by NBC from 1960 thru the 80's at least. For several years, including 1980, Bryant Gumbel was the studio host. He did a great job, and later moved on to the Today show.

*** Bob Griese was on his way out in 80... so in 80-81-82 Miami started either the ancient Don Strock or the young David Woodley out of LSU.

**** Miami had a great 1981, but lost the famous OT game to San Diego with the great Kellen Winslow. In 82, Woodley took them to the Super Bowl (beat the Jets in the AFC Mud Bowl Championship, great game to watch as a kid when it's 12-degrees out in Providence), but the Dolphin defense was the real strength behind AJ Duhe (also from LSU). Marino joined in 83 of course.

***** I talk too much.

Loved the NFL era, from 76 thru mid 80's or so.

Depends if you're talking about FS1 specifically or Fox overall. The reason why the MLB games are on FS1 is because "big" Fox wants the college football games. That seems to indicate that college football is actually becoming more important within the overall Fox structure. Note that Fox signed a massive TV deal with MLB - they *have* to show MLB games on Saturday each week on either Big Fox or FS1. They can't just not fulfill their contract (and not that they wouldn't want to considering how much they paid for MLB games).

RE: FS1 has announcers in Los Angeles calling La Tech-WKU game
Interesting tidbit considering the topic of this thread: Dave Wannstedt actually lives in Naples, Florida, which is only about a 2 hour drive from the FAU campus. However, Fox had him fly over 5 hours cross-country to call the Miami-FAU game from a studio in Los Angeles. Heck - he probably would have had to drive to Fort Lauderdale to get a direct flight to LA, too, which would have meant he was only 20 minutes from the FAU campus at that point. So, Fox certainly wasn't saving money on travel expenses for the on-air talent. The more that I think about it, the more asinine that it sounds. This isn't like having to send a crew overseas to England to call a soccer game.

I guess to me I just never know what to expect when I flip to FS1. I got to watching Nascar earlier this year but they stopped doing Nascar a month or 2 ago. .

Training college football fans to watch FS1 is going to be easier if there is Football on Saturdays instead of a mix of soccer, football , baseball, UFC, etc...

I have Dish so FS1 is kinda by itself away from ESPN so I think sometimes it's' easy for fans to forget to check FS1 for a game because of that. Plus you have to have a different package to get FS1 above what you need to get ESPN so that hurts as well.

It just seem that between being the new channel for college football, many people not being aware of FS1, and the odd mix of programming that they are showing seems to be an surprising strategy to me.

You do realize NASCAR has always had two different set of tv partners, early part of the year was FOX and second half was ESPN until this year when NBC won the rights.

I understand what you're saying. ESPN has such a large depth of sports inventory across the board that it's the dominant provider in nearly every sport that it covers. NBCSN has sort of positioned itself as the affluent/hipster sports network with its English Premier League and NHL coverage. FS1 has a hodgepodge of sports and is still trying to find an identity.

I think the main difference right now is that Disney makes significantly (meaning boatloads and boatloads) more money by showing a sports event on ESPN compared to ABC (in fact, Disney would make more money by just showing a test pattern on ESPN compared to anything else that Disney owns), so ESPN is their primary sports outlet while ABC only has a limited amount of college football and NBA programming. In contrast, Fox is still making more money from over-the-air Fox compared to FS1, so over-the-air Fox is going to get first dibs on the top sports events.

Exactly. Trying to find an identity is a great way to put it. When you look at what they show it is indeed a hodgepodge. Car auctions, Boxing, UFC, Nascar, Baseball, College football, horse racing, soccer, etc...
