its kind of disheartning with all the improvements, the quality of football, the game day options to hear game in and game out complaints. How much more can they do. It is what it is, i guess everyone has to make up their mind if they want to go or not. And if you don't thats ok, you can't be everything for everybody. Having said that, looks like great weather this Saturday lets have fun
Yeah , Im starting to re-think my Big 12 aspirations for NIU, its becoming apparent our fans are not that type of fan, not ready for that kind of a conference yet.
Let's not overreact to 1 game against a lower P5 team. Did we really learn anything we already didn't know on Saturday? NIU is in the early stages of building the fanbase. That takes decades, not seasons.
Although a few thousand more would have everyone feeling better, it is somewhat immaterial in terms of conference movement given attendance was never NIU's selling point. Physical attendance will always be tough, but at the same time, NIU can quickly makeup ground in TV draw (I admit that those can be correlated).
I don't think NIU will ever make it to the Big 12 with OU and UT, but NIU joining a P5 was always going to be like TCU and Baylor. With top-25 teams those two schools often barely break 40k, with TCU often only being in the 30s for actual attendance. Even in the early stages of growth that NIU is in, they could get 30-40k for a regional power (that travels) like ND or Wisconsin.
Extending this $19.65 may suck (in the words of HuskieJohn), but it is completely expected, if not the norm. It is cliche, but you have to spend money to make money. Iowa State used to give tickets away for $15 for their hillside seating while getting mid-30s to low 40s. Now they just played in front of 62K against an FCS team and coming off 2-10. Nebraska at one time paid radio stations in western Iowa to carry NU football. Subsidized ticket sales is one of the fastest ways to build the fanbase.
Build premium seating to capture more $ from the small die-hards you do have. Move the loss in seats from those suites to the endzones for a better atmosphere while also adding several thousand. Get good non-conference games and make the non-endzone seats only available via season tickets. Btw, Baylor used to tarp off some of their seating and Iowa State contemplated first hiding seats with a video board until more than 62k was needed (they ended up stopping at 62k).
But we know the price point is not the main hurdle. NIU needs the MAC to stop weekday games or NIU needs to move to the AAC.
