That's what it's all about. I had a similar experience at UNC and ECU. I see a visiting fan I'm going to offer em up a beer and thank them for making the trip. High five Marshall. I wish I could make the trip this season but will for one of these games soon.

04-cheers

I have never missed a UTSA CUSA game home or away. UTSAMarineVet and I made the trip to Marshall two years ago, and everyone was over the top nice to us. I look forward to my next trip to Huntington. I need some more of Grandpa's Apple Pie. One of the Marshall fans on this board had us at his tailgate. All I remember is that he is a TKE becuse I have a friend that is a UTSA TKE.

Funny...I could have copied his entire article, inserted LA Tech in place of Purdue, and you would come away with my impression if the CCG last season. Good people.

RE: Purdue fans view of tailgating at marshall...
We got to Marshall fairly late, 45 minutes before kickoff, after leaving NY at 8pm the night before and fighting a blizzard on top of a mountain just to get there. It was cold and windy but everyone we meet walking up to the stadium was friendly enough.

After the game only a couple Marshall fans made a ass of themselves as we walked back to the car. But they were put in place by other Marshall fans walking beside them. So even in defeat Marshall fans were OK in my book. Even helped us get out of the lot and showing us the easier way to beat the traffic....

But honestly that's been my experience on most road trips...a few places you get the young punks but most of the time other fans put those in their place. Hopefully one day Western will play at Marshall earlier in the year because both trips we made (football/basketball) was winter time and I want to see their campus in a different light....Spring or summer

We all have the young hothead fans but most of the time that only a few

Agree with YG. I think all schools have great fans who genuinely want visiting fans to leave their game with a positive experience of the game, college and town. Marshall and Huntington seem to be easy targets for negative press and we like to turn that around and change peoples views when we can. Its a great school and great community where most people still value kindness and respect.

To be honest the only school that bucks the trend and has constant issues is WVU. Those people are just a different breed and not in a good way. Va Tech people were great, as were Clemson and many other schools we've been to.

Just gonna link this thread the next time I see "Marshall fans are so(insert negative description)" because of how 2 or 3 of our posters engage people on this board. 03-wink

Well, if the visiting Purdue fans had walked around the tailgates telling us our school would admit anybody, we only won because we took props and other such things, I'm not sure they would have written the same comments.

What some folks don't get (although I think fans from the Deep South do) is that nothing comes easy in Appalachia. West Virginia ranks 49th in about everything (thanks Mississippi) and we hear about that constantly. So we tend to rely on our own sense of self worth to combat the constant negative perception of the area. That makes us distrustful of outsiders and quick to defend ourselves. It's a cultural thing. However, when you get past that, people in this region are friendly and helpful to a fault because they know what it's like to be in a rough situation. It's the kind of place where you never seem to have to open a door because someone is holding it open for you already. It's the reason I came back here after moving to Louisville for 12 years after college.

RE: Purdue fans view of tailgating at marshall...
Sometimes I wish some of our fans can be like yours. For the "most" part we're hospitable but the ones that aren't are those that can't hold their booze. I got pretty nice treatment in Tulsa when they were cusa. No bad mouthing and a few thank you's for coming. That's the way it should be.

I just wish we were closer to all the schools in the south and southeast so that we could go to our games there. It's cheaper going to Hawai'i for us than to go to Marshall U. Anyway, it seems that way.

Every part of our conference is very cool...from Appalachia to the Desert Southwest.

I must not be seeing the same things you're seeing.

Seems like the vast majority of the Marshall posters are decent folk. They have one or two blithering idiots, but who doesn't?

Just because they're in the mountains doesn't make them App State.

RE: Purdue fans view of tailgating at marshall...
Three more Purdue fan quotes from their Rivals message board:

"Not about Appleby, Shoop or any of the countless other game "what ifs". This comment is about how utterly accomodating the folks in Huntington were. I lost count, but I must have been stopped by total strangers 20-30 times thanking me for coming to their city or hoping I was enjoying my time in there. My seat was in the middle of a sea of green, but everyone around me was friendly and solid football fans. And one more final comment. Their "We are"/"Mar-shall" cheer gets both side of their stadium shaking and it's so contageous I almost found myself joining in also late in the game. If the game had ended after fifty minutes, I would have come home a very happy Boiler. "

"Had the exact same experience as Bluegrass Boiler. We tailgated right across the street from the stadium so tons of fans passed us all day long and none were rude, all were friendly and some almost scarily so. A drunk guy came by and handed out pints of some kind of moonshine (bought at the gas station - not his own kind of home brew). Wouldn't even take a burger in return..."

"I made my first trip to Huntington yesterday with a couple of buddies, one a Marshall grad. While I would have loved to have come home with a win, I came away very impressed with the hospitality Herd fans showed us.
I don't know how many times we were thanked for coming but it was a bunch. We probably ended up at a half dozen different tailgates and most were just from walking by and being invited over. Many, many free beers were consumed and we were well fed. After the tailgates ended, we headed to some bars and more hospitality ensued.
Parts of the night are a little fuzzy (15 hours of drinking will do that) but I think we hit about every bar in Huntington (Buddy's, Black Sheep, In Between, Fat Patty's, The Union, Hank's and St. Marks) and we were well received at each.
Thank you Herd Nation. You gained a new fan."

RE: Purdue fans view of tailgating at marshall...
It is very hard to explain the connection between Marshall University and Huntington. Marshall football helped this town cope with one of the most tragic events in our area. It solidified our community and gave the game meaning that transcends beyond a win/loss record. If you are from the Huntington area, you grow up on Marshall. This town and community bleed green. We are passionate and defensive about our university in much the same way most are of their family. We consider ourselves hosts and ambassadors, and if you find yourself at our stadium in the opposing school colors, we will go out of our way to make you feel welcome. It's a lesson our town learned long ago--wins are awesome, but in Huntington, football is about community and the connection it creates between people.
