Exclamation WOW! Tier One Football is EXPENSIVE!! GO COOGS!!

I didn't think that this level of continued transfers from academics to athletics was LEGAL for a Tier One State Institution...

In regard to their Big 12 ambition, I don't see Texas, Tech, TCU, or Baylor supporting that. Without the support of the in state schools that plan is dead. If the Big 12 does expand it will be into new TV markets.

Looks like Khator (and presumably the UH Trustees) have gone all in on obtaining a P5 invite. If they don't succeed, it will likely cost her the job and in the worst case, UH may end up dropping athletic programs altogether. I don't see the State legislature bailing them out anytime soon.

A pretty desperate strategy IMHO. Or a lack of institutional control. Even University Presidents have people to report to...

I know Rice wants UH to fail but I hate to be the bearer of bad news....that will not happen. If Rice invested even half as much as we have in athletics, they wouldn't be in their current situation.

I wouldn't say we want to see UH fail, it's more of amusing ourselves watching UH try so hard to be someone you are not, throw the kitchen sink and sell your soul to be someone you are not, in order to get the hot girl to go out on a date with you. If after all that trying, she finally does go out with you, all the more power to you.

And yet we are basically in the same situation- on the outside looking in. I know you think you are light years better, but that is the truth. We are not close to a P5 invite, but despite all of the agitating, whining, and begging, neither is UH

What's funny is that according to farmer, they've spent more than twice what we have and yet have virtually nothing to show for the expense. I suppose we can debate whether they are closer to an invite than we are, but I think it pretty obvious based on the Boise experience that there is more to a p5 invite than winning or facilities, and that the biggest things that UH have going for it are location in a major market and 40,000 plus students (across the three primary campuses)... which of course have nothing to do with athletics spending.

They have to be one of the few remaining FBS schools of 30,000+ students in the country that aren't in p5... and while they can point to having spent 130mm or whatever on their new stadium, they would still be among the smaller stadiums in p5 should they ascend. I know that SMU talked about how they could add capacity, and so, too could UH I'm sure, but the expense wasn't insignificant and at least in SMUs case as I understand it, most of the seating would be in the open end zone.

Virtually nobody at Rice wants to see UH fail. They are a very short and cheap trip for all of our teams and even when they've been pretty good, we've had decent luck against them for the past 15-30 years. It's perhaps true that more don't care if they fail, and I suppose some of us don't like the idea of a school seemingly intent on (and needing to) increasing its academic profile spending quite as much of their limited resources on non-academic ventures... but frankly, it's not OUR money and may turn out to be a good investment.

I think it says something that a UH troll needs to come defend them with arguments in the abstract... but it is what it is. They've spent a WHOLE lot of money that they don't exactly seem to have 'to burn'. While we can debate whether or not we think it will work, none of us have bet our jobs on it like they do.

RE: WOW! Tier One Football is EXPENSIVE!! GO COOGS!!
Colleges have a problem in that probably only a handful break at least even on athletics. It is worse now than in the old days because there are now more athletic personnel and coach's salaries are much higher than they used to be. There is good publicity value about being in P5 conference and the revenue is better to offset some of the expenses. A G5 conference member gets much less publicity from football, so there is a big pressure to ante up to get in a P5 conference.

I would expect Khator to not lose her job because she has made progress in upgrading the rest of the university. The money used for athletics might have been better made elsewhere to further improve the university, but if an ante is not made now for athletics then it ensures that there will never be a P5 bid. I do not want to spend my money at present for any UH tickets because we could be competing with them for a single P5 opportunity in Houston (even though I am a UH law grad and have gone to a few UH games in the past).

Rice has the same problem about having to spend on athletics to have any chance to get a P5 bid. My own opinion is that we need to try to get a P5 bid because there is no point wasting money in the distant future if we are stuck forever in a G5. I was surprised that UAB decided that they would try to get football going again in 2017. I do not think UAB would ever have a chance to get in P5 conference and the best they would ever have is the CUSA.

I doubt that this is true. In the AAC alone, there are:

University of Central Florida -- 60,810
University of South Florida -- 48,353
University of Cincinnati -- 43,691
Temple University -- 37,788
University of Connecticut -- 31,119

FTR: University of Houston -- 40,914

C-USA has three with >30K:

Florida International University -- 52,980
University of North Texas -- 36,216
Florida Atlantic University -- 30,803

The Mountain West has four, and a near miss:

University of New Mexico -- 35,211
San Jose State University -- 33,805
San Diego State University -- 33,790
Colorado State University -- 31,256
(and near miss: University of Nevada, Las Vegas -- 29,069)

I originally typed 40,000.... and I guess I should have left it as such but I didn't want to look it up as I didn't think it was important to the point.

at 40,914, that would make them the 5th largest school on the list... to me, that's a few. Some of these other schools only recently joined FBS and that likely has an impact as well. I never said they were next... or even remotely next.

I stand by my intended point, that their size and location are more likely to get them a p5 invite than their budget.... though I regret making it appear as if 30,000 was some sort of a cut-off.

I can't imagine the non-UH legislators are any to keen to be funding UH academically only to have those funds shifted to athletics.
