Great! So we'll begin the third series down 14-0 with an INT and a fumble. Relax, I only jest. But I just don't see the point in platooning them. I never would've thought that Doc would have burned his redshirt. Holcombe must have really fallen into the crapper for Doc to not even want to use him in lieu of burning the redshirt.

Yeah I think if you're going to burn the kids redshirt you kinda got to commit to him imo. Obviously Doc wasn't pleased with QB performance last week if he's going to put the freshman in but I don't understand not giving him the start.

One Drive Wonder. Litton coming in Saturdsy will really save us this season.

Exactly. If the redshirt is burnt you might as well go all in with him.

RE: Birdsong Blues
just because he plays him doesn't mean you burn the redshirt...if the kid looks bad in the next 2 games or Birdsong shows he can get the job done this freshman will come down with a injury.

I'm fairly sure you have to play in 30% of the games to waste a medical redshirt.

I think the bigger concern should be the Marshall defense. With the praise Birdsong was getting from coaching and fans....

he must have been shredding the Marshall defense in practice

How do you arrive at this conclusion??? I just want to see your thought process on this... and yes, I am being serious and non-sarcastic.

It came from reading this board. The kid was said to be basically the as good as Cato, Marshall's all everything QB. There was talk about how good this kid looked in spring and fall practice and how the coaching staff at Marshall though Marshall wouldn't miss a beat. Not the exact words but in that line...

now I assume that high phrase was based off what the kid did in the months leading up to this season. So if he was doing great that Marshall's offense might even be better this year...

then that means it was against the Marshall defense and I assume he went against the 1s most of the time.

It's why I don't put much stock in preseason expectations based off what people see in practice or pickup games (basketball). A kid might look quick, because the players around him are slower. A kid might be able to hit every pass...because the defenders he's going against are not good cover guys or slow or a number of other things.

According to Marshall fans today...the kid is washed up and I assume the coaches are feeling that way also. So he's Mr All Everything going against the Marshall defense. Washed up going against Ohio's defense. So either the kid got bad overnight or the defense he was facing got better

RE: Birdsong Blues
To be fair to all involved - rarely did Birdsong go up against the #1 defense in camp. It was usually a mixutre of 1's, 2's and 3's. He also had a red jersey on meaning - don't touch him at all. He knew that so he could stand in the pocket and look for a WR when in real game situations he would be running for his life. Yes, we have issues on D - small front and corner coverage but the D kept us in both our first two games.

Birdsong has been disappointing to say the least. It may have been a case of fans reading too much into what he did in fall camp and drinking the kool aid.

I hope Litton works out, if not, I see 3-4 more losses for sure.

I see what you're saying, but SV is right. Birdie never went against the entire 1's... And several defensive 1's didn't play. So it was a mix. But what he's saying, I've said from the start of the season. The defense will keep us in most games (however Tindal is a liability at corner) as they did against both PU and OU.

It's a long season, but if we don't find a qb that can make a downfield pass, we're in trouble...

RE: Birdsong Blues
I personally don't think Birdsong is as bad as he played Saturday and if given the time to get his confidence back he'll be OK. What he's lacking is something special that Cato had...

the ability to get out of trouble with his feet and still look down the field while doing it. Sometime a offense should change to fit the strengths of a QB. Not to jerk him and try to fit a young qb into that role. Build Birdsong some confidence by calling dump offs and quick hitter. Then build that into throwing down the field. After the season Marshall had last year...it makes it harder to build because everyone is expecting more of the same. But sometimes you just have to stay with the qb a littler longer to build that confidence.

I think you are right about that, and Marshall should definitely stay with Birdsong a while longer -- at least through the ODU game.

Not happening. Litton is to good to sit the bench even though he is just a freshman. Lot of football to be played and he will gain valuable experience as the season moves on.
