This and kicking game are what I worry about.

Big plays both places and we are toast. Someone said they would get two long kick returns. If that happens, we probably can't win.

More frosh playing this week on D for Horns. Hope Edmondson paying close attention to who is substituting in to take advantage of their excitement, aggressiveness, and youth to get them out-of-position as they will want to make plays vs. playing assignments....especially in the secondary.

Some talking heads on one of the sports channels last night were rehashing Texas v. ND. Their conclusion was that Texas can still beat people when it can out-athlete them, but that the Horns can't out-scheme and out-execute opponents of equal or greater athletic ability. In the past, I've tended to feel that way about us. Texas will out-athlete us, although that gap is much narrower than it was at one time. To win, we must find ways to out-scheme and out-execute them.

I have always felt that our issue in the last 50 or so years has been exactly that. IE UT has just out-athlete us (plus their striped twelfth man), but many times, we were able to compete against the Arkansas, BYU's and A&M's of the world by playing smarter and better. How many times have we lost to UH at the last minute due to just pure athletic skill despite outplaying them earlier? The perfect example of this was the Leland McElroy game vs A&M, which I can believe I brought up.

RE: Looking ahead to Texas
While in disarray, UT is still full of top recruits who are desperate to 'bust a move' against Rice to establish themselves as the next budding star of UT football. Like Owl40 has stated, UT will over-pursue and take the bait to make a big play, and our game plan should seek to exploit their over-exuberance by placing 'bait' and unleashing tactical surprises.

UT is looking at this game to reassert itself, yet if Rice can get UT on its back quickly, UT will psychologically crumble. Giving UT plenty of time to find their rhythm would be disastrous. I am hoping Bailiff is up for the challenge, but I will be sorely disappointed if Bailiff approaches this game as one to 'keep the powder dry' for conference. This IS the most important game of the year!

I agree that this where the Owls are likely to be most exposed. UT will throw deep early and often - speed-wise, how do their receivers match up with our DB's? I'd have to believe they are faster. I hope UT does crash and burn, and the Owls play mistake-free. Unfortunately, I'm thinking a 38-13 UT win.

RE: Looking ahead to Texas
One very positive thing about this week that will be better analyzed and reflected on post-game is the Rice FB brand.

This week has seen Rice get 10x the publicity it normally gets before any Conference-USA game. Albeit slowly and sometimes a bit backhanded, the Rice FB brand is finally improving. Continue to hear, read, see, etc. comments to the effect of 'this is not your father's Rice FB team' Although there is fear of Texas losing to Rice so building-up your competition won't make it seem as bad, many people not close to Rice FB are giving the Owls more respect than I've seen them get in a very long time.

Obviously, result on Saturday and Horns performance for remainder of season will greatly influence the staying power of this observation, it has been nice not be the usual laughing stock, cupcake, etc that we have traditionally been seen as before playing high profile games. Been clear this week to the Horn faithful and press that Rice is not New Mexico St., North Texas, etc. (which is what they would rather play). Historically, we just get lumped in to the cupcake bucket of any G5 school coming into town. Not this year.

From page 1 of the Oct. 13, 1917, Rice Thresher ... two weeks before the Owls first victory ever over the Longhorns.
