Player Grades
Terrell - Heck of a game. Looked tentative early but came on strong later. I can't imagine many other QB's throwing for 365 yards against MSU's defense this year. I bet that holds up. There were times he simply sat in the pocket for too long. You can't do that against a team like State. But I'm nit-picking (A)

Davis and Phillips - Wow. Just wow. (A+)

Braverman - A couple of unusual drops were unfortunate, but otherwise had a real nice game. He sometimes dances around too much on punt returns instead of just hitting the gaps IMO. (A-)

Offensive Line - Did the best they could given the circumstances. I thought Chukes did an outstanding job on Calhoun, even despite the two hands-to-the-face penalties. No easy task. (A)

Linebackers - I think we might have the best linebackers in the MAC.
Austin Lewis played an awesome game tonight. I love his instincts. He looks back to 100% and that a really exciting. Same goes for Spillane. Man these guys are really good. Amazing what one year difference makes. (A+)

Zamort - I'm struggling with Zamort. Yes, he covers well. But it drives me nuts how much contact he initiates down the field and never turns his head when the ball is thrown his way. He is going to get called for PI a lot this season if he doesn't watch some of that. But overall, I thought he was a blanket out there. Our DB's in general played a solid game against a future 1st round NFL pick. (B+)

Honorable Mention - Our backup RB's looked pretty good (Bellamy and Bogan). And I almost forgot to mention Fabian Johnson. Wow he put on some MEAN blocks on third downs, in pass protection for Zach Terrell. I can see why Fleck has him out there on third down situations so much. Asantay Brown looked good in the secondary too. Atkins also made a lot of really good plays.

Definitely concerned about DePalma and Franklin. Hope they're okay. Any other injuries?

I think your analysis is spot on. I also thought Phillips needs to turn his head in coverage too. I think he may have had a couple picks a few times if he had just peeked at the ball. The db's did maintain very close coverage though and I liked that.

Overall a lot to be optimistic about. I wish we could trade the Ohio state game for Purdue, or someone like that. But we will see how it goes. Just worried about injuries.

RE: Player Grades
Drew said he talked to Fleck after the game and Franklin was kept out of the game after he went down-despite his desire to go back in-because of possible concussion. They'll probably keep him out a game or two more, just to play it safe. No news on De Palma.

Agree with the ratings up above, by and large we played a heck of a game. But, why were we so shaky for the first 25 minutes? Missed some great opportunities to add to the score.

I am very proud of how Phillips is performing as a DB. He looked GREAT. If blessed with health....I could see him developing into an extremely special DB. Good call on Zamort. Scary.

RE: Player Grades
When playing as much Cover 1 (Man-Free) as we did-do, Corners are not going to see ball as well as in Zone.

Trade-off is hopefully tighter coverage.

No! Really?

Still hanging on to a Chance that Zach steps in 01-rivals and will be replaced by who now?

Apparently Flaco is back up and not knowing much about him other than he's a freshman is scary.Apparently the coaching staff feel he's got the goods.

Nobody. Terrell is unquestionably the best QB on our roster right now.

I'll never be convinced he's a "great QB" but he's certainly exceeded my expectations and has done a really nice job managing the offense.

What's your analysis of his play last night? He played a perfect game? Nothing to work on?

Thought Zach took a quarter to comprehend the speed of MSU's DL and LBers. After that, he managed it much better.

Anyone know which recruits were at the game last night? Had to be exciting for them, seeing a chance to step in and contribute right away.

Can't be great, even with Fleck's coaching, because he wasn't recruited by Fleck.

Glad to see our TE-Jeremy Mullinax-factor into the big gains and scoring last night. We haven't had that before during the Fleck tenure. Adds one more wrinkle for opposing defenses to worry about. 04-rock

Not a perfect game with 2 picks. Thought maybe he should have thrown the ball away before getting sacked a couple times.

The first sack, he had Davis streaking down the seam in single coverage. Ah well.

Terrell has the head for the job and is an accurate passer with "good" not great arm. He's a great MAC QB, among several really good ones. He's not physically gifted by any means. Slightly undersized and not amazingly fast. Definetly good enough to win the MAC.

I personally don't see DePalma getting his job back even if he can come back healthy. Franklin looked fine on the sidelines jumping up and down and yelling in the 4th. Still might hold him out a game just because it is a head injury. Terrell also had a rolled ankle hopefully he can get some ice on it.

There was just not a lot of time to get a consistent running game going. Franklin got his 3-4 yards on most runs; looked great receiving.

DePalma will be out for awhile. They basically carried him off the field after the game and to the locker room. Too bad for him, he plays so hard.

This group has a chance to be REALLY special down the road.
