The 4 runs up the middle from the two yard line was beyond stupid. The MSU dline is too good for that. Why he doesn't have a goal line package with Matthews at qb is beyond me. Nick can't run for anything, but Matthews can.

Was happy to see Monken coach to win until he punted at the end. That was chickencrap. The team looks better no doubt, but in the end they lost 34-16. I don't care how bad we have been, moral victories don't count. Hopefully Monken and Lindsey will get over their infatuation with Nick and let Matthews help the offense to get in the end zone.
They kept saying that Monken's not calling plays this year. What I saw was a tale of 2 teams. USM is improved. And will improve over the season. MSU ain't the team they were last year and Dak Prescott shouldn't worry about Heisman hype. We need some more protection up front. We don't need to abandon the running game if it isn't working, but if the middle is clogged run to the edges. I think we're in decent shape.

RE: Southern Miss hosts Miss State
The biggest takeaway from last night is Southern Miss finally has a viable FBS team again. Not great by any means, but no longer futile.

I've already said my peace about the punt at the end. My only other significant complaint is the play calling from the 2 after the absolutely gorgeous trick play. I don't even mind running the ball 4 times, but if you're just going to run up the middle trying to gain 6 feet, don't do it out of the freaking shotgun. I'm going to stand on the porch and shake my fist at the kids on my lawn here and say out of 4 plays in that situation, at least one should've been a good ol' QB wedge.

Beyond that, our guys tackled, caught, and ran the ball much better than in recent memory. Kickoff coverage? Not so much.

Bottom line, we're a whale of a lot better, but still lost at home by 18 to an unranked team that gave us a lot of breaks. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season, but am not making any bowl plans yet.

We actually had a cusa crew last year in starkville. it helps when the Governor is a southern miss alum and state is concerned about college board spots.
