The Worst College Football Announcers?
Last night I was reminded I hate David Pollack. Literally says, "You HAVE to go for it on 4th down here" prior to 3rd down, and then says "You HAVE to kick the field goal here" on the 4th down of that exact series. He's said stupid crap for the entirety of his announcing existence.
Tonight it was Rod Gilmore. Man, I don't even remember what he said. But he's Pollack-esque as far as I'm concerned.
Ed Cunningham is also on the list. He once slobbed all over Nikita Whitlock (who?!) during an FSU/Wake broadcast. He repeatedly called Whitlock the ACC's best player - 2013 - despite FSU destroying Wake, winning the ACC, the national title, and having the Heisman winner that season.
Verne Lundquist is another blowhard. When SEC fans tell me they hate Lundquist, you know Lundquist must be terrible. Gary Danielson is awful during the broadcasts, too, but he's actually quite good doing non-game radio during the week. Guess CBS pays pretty well to get him to go total-homer.
A few years ago I heard Warrick Dunn do an ESPN3 game. I think it was a Wake vs somebody game. Something very low level like that. He was pretty terrible, unfortunately. He's one of the ultimate/only "good guys" in football. He's built over 100 houses for single-parent families after losing his mom (police officer) as a high schooler. But his voice isn't good for tv/radio and you could tell he wasn't comfortable doing the broadcast. That is literally the only bad thing I will ever say about Dunn. He deserves every accolade people want to give him, even if he doesn't deserve it.
If you can add a school-related announcer to the list, even better...
Just copy/paste the list and add to it, so we have a running tally:
David Pollack
Rod Gilmore
Ed Cunningham
Verne Lundquist
Warrick Dunn

I don't like Vern either. I mute the tv every time Vern & Raftery are a doing a basketball game as well. I remember when Vern pronounced a players name wrong. He was informed of it but kept on mispronouncing his name anyway intentionally throughout the players career. Those 2 need to be retired already.

Nikita Whitlock has become a pretty good two way player for the Giants this year.
I also find Chris Fowler to be a pretty bad announcer.

RE: The Worst College Football Announcers?
I think it's probably easier to just name who you like...it's generally a shorter list.
I like Blackledge, Musburger, Herbstreit, Palmer.
I'm not particularly fond of anyone else.
I think the worst of all time was Brian Baldinger. I'm not even sure he's doing games anymore and it should stay that way.

The closeness of his voice to Woody's is amazing, but doesn't go quite as high as Woody's did. I loved the story about asking Woody's wife who she listened to when UNC played GT and she said "why Wes of course, I hear Woody talk all the time".

Todd Blackledge is a great announcer.

Bobby Knight is/was my favorite basketball announcer for analysis. Plus, he is not afraid to call not crappy coaching and poor players. Refreshingly not PC.
Bill Walton is just plain fun to listen to.

Rod Gilmore is the worst. A self-satisfied blowhard and not particularly knowledgeable about football. His broadcasts are one ill-informed opinion after another.

I think Joe Tessoitore is fine doing play by play, but is terrible on College Football Final.

RE: The Worst College Football Announcers?
The ones that really rub me the wrong way through an entire game are Gilmore and Pollack. I also agree that Lundquist and Danielson are a pretty tough pair to listen too. Danielson seems like he's constantly indignant about something that's happening. Not that that CBS broadcast misses me, but I watch that less than I would because of that team.
A lot of the guys that do the lesser games on ESPNU/3 aren't very good, but I don't really even keep up with who's who at that level. But it's a lot harder job to be good at than most people realize I think, and you see guys really develop over time. To me, Gilmore just doesn't have "it" and he's been at it a long time. I just don't think he's good. Pollack is awful, and was thrown in way, way before he was anywhere near prepared for such a high profile role. He should have spent years on ESPN3 first.
Most of the rest are just fine/ok/whatever. I don't get that bent out of shape...it's too easy to take a slight at any given thing. These guys are just trying to come up with a storyline on the fly sometimes, and sometimes they get off track. I'd say of the minor leagues, Ray Bentley and Chris Spielman are ok, and Cunningham and Brian Griese are ones I am less fond of.
There are a few that I do actually enjoy, as in they're actually a plus to the game...
Wes Durham - I'm not a GT guy, but this guy may literally be the best I've ever heard. Wes is absolutely the best in my opinion.
Fowler and Herbstreit - I don't like their take sometimes, but I enjoy the work they do
Nessler and Blackledge - Really solid team that doesn't overwhelm the game. These guys are the anti-Verne-and-Danielson in my opinion
and wait for it...
Jesse Palmer. I think Jesse Palmer is really good. And I hate him because he's a gator, but I think he does an excellent job. I thought the booth of Fowler, Herbstreit and Palmer was a really good one, and I think Reece and Palmer are good (if they could just jettison Pollack). And he's good with Musburger. Musburger is a guy I was hating about 10 years ago, but I actually think he's come back around to be a pretty decent listen in recent years.
