What did Tony day about the big men. Jack looks like he lost a lot of weight not being able to train all summer.

If these perimeter players, the question marks, have improved their shots AND their defense, we will be competitive. Omar needs to be able to score on most nights. These nights off won't work this year. The elephant in the room is down low on both ends. There's no getting around it. Maybe this freshman can help?

He's going to have to. Especially since we have no idea what we have with Whitman. He is either the team's best low post scorer or he could be a non-factor on the bench. The range of possibilities is really that great.

Tony said that he loves Sean, not surprising since Sean was there. He noted that Jack did indeed have shoulder surgery in March but that he was now fully cleared for basketball activities and that we would bring him along slowly during the early stages of practice. He noted, and Sean confirmed, that Jack is by far our most athletic big man and I heard nothing to suggest that he is not being counted on as a big contributor this year.

Regarding Seacat, he said that the kid is coming into the program already physically ready to play (He jokingly asked Sean whether Seacat wasn't already as big as him and Sean nodded no as the room laughed), but that he had a ways to go from a technical standpoint. No one asked whether or not he will be redshirted, but I would have to think that the possibility exists unless we get hit with an injury or Jack gets a more expanded role that has him and another big on the floor at the same time at times.

You're only as good as your weakest link, and our current 13th scholarship player would arguably have been in the top 5 just three years ago.
These guys will really be pushing each other at every position. Our starters 3 years ago, and prior, never had that benefit.

13 it is.

15 for women. No partials, like in baseball.

CBS Sports ranked every Division I team. They have us at 118. The only CAA team higher is Hofstra at 96.

No way Northeastern is not much higher than 157.

What a mess for Dayton with their returning, leading scorer suing the school over his suspension.

It also has UNCW at 253. Didn't they have no seniors last year or something like that?

No disrespect to Columbia or Yale, but both in the top 100?

I believe that they started at least 3 seniors and that their best players were seniors.

They also just recently had to kick one of their recruits off the team. He was supposed to be one of their top players this season after sitting out last season.

In these types of Pre-Season poles, you really have to look into who was on the panel making the choices. After the Top 50, you really start getting pollster bias, because most people don't know that much about every league. You will probably find a former Ivy League AD or SID name on that list. (Just surmising here.)

I don't know about this year, but Yale had a pretty good team last year.

Yes, Yale is emulating HAAvard in mens basketball, [and even football, now accepting lots of transfer students] by essentially granting an unlimited number of "need based" scholarships to young men who [BTW] happen to be good basketball players.

A couple observations looking at the team picture.

1) Seacat is definitely the tallest guy and doesn't appear to be a typical freshman bean pole. If Whitman and Sheldon are 6'9, Seacat is at least 6'10. I look forward to seeing where he is and how he competes.

2) Unless the angle is weird, Rowley looks a couple inches shorter than Whitman. He doesn't look much taller than Tot, Dixon, or Tarpey. I'd put him at 6'7ish.

3) Those shoes... How are you going to take a team pic and show those ugly mismatch shoes? Schlotman with black shoes. Cohn has shoes with straps. Burchfield looks like he has running shoes on. You always get issued the fresh new gear for picture day. It reminds me of something you see in a JV team shot.

This isn't a plan to benefit the sports teams. It applies to the whole student body. If your parents make less than X you get a full need based scholarship. It just happens to have expanded their recruiting pool somewhat because more kids get money now. We shouldn't use this as an excuse for not being as good as Harvard or Yale. We give athletic scholarships.

At lest with respect to Harvard, they have just been doing a great job of selling the school and targeting kids they never did before. Jeremy Lin and consistent winning have been big factors in that. They also have a group of wealthy boosters who give the program lots of money for recruiting.

The angle is weird. I have Seacat and Whitman as the tallest, with Sheldon a little shorter. Then Rowley, Tot, Dixon, and Tarpey at 6'6"-6'7" (listed). Seacat definitely looks filled out, though, for a freshman. Much bigger than Whitman was.

If I had more faith in our offensive playcalling, I'd be excited about getting Tot into post matchups and the roster flexibility. As it is, we'll still be able to mix and match all over the place to make sure Dixon's on the best guard and Tarpey's on the best forward.
