Reminder -- parking charges for football this year
Don't forget your $5 bill!

Quote:
PARKING CHANGES FOR RICE FOOTBALL:

Please note parking changes for Rice Football this year. All parking lots now require a parking pass or fans can pay $5 cash on game day. As in the past, Owl Club donors of $500+ with season tickets receive a complimentary parking pass. All other fans can purchase a season parking pass for $20 or pay $5 at the lots on game day (CASH ONLY!). Please call the ticket office at 713-348-OWLS with any questions.

Or you can up your Owl Club donation and get a parking pass... in addition to supporting a worthy bunch of student athletes.

Unconventional, anyway.

This is cool: I just learned that if you pay $5 tomorrow, you can take your stub to the Fan Services desk at the stadium and exchange it for a full-season pass for $15. Great planning by Athletics, I think!

RE: Reminder -- parking charges for football this year
One of the things we learned at the Fan Experience Committee meeting was the rationale for the parking charge. The athletic department is charged $125K/year to use the University's parking lots and they are trying to recoup some/all of that money. If they were trying to make money I doubt the amount would be $5.
So if you want to pay with 500 pennies I suggest you stop off at Allen Center to pay there.

What is the rationale for the university charging athletics $125K per year for use of the parking lots? Seems like a pretty hefty fee for a parking lot and a rather easy thing to not do anymore. Then the $5 per car can actually go to...well not the parking department.

Didn't parking use to be included in the cost of the ticket?

I can think of a lot things they don't use that money for. But hopefully they use it for pertinent (and semi related) services like the shuttle bus costs, and/or campus police security.

I imagine it is an apportionment of the cost of maintaining the lots. Whether or not it is a fair apportionment would be the question.

RE: Reminder -- parking charges for football this year
So with the charge for parking, does this mean Rice is expecting more demand (fans in cars) than they have supply (parking spaces)?

I believe this is the case and also the reason Shepherd controls usage of the lot in front of the music school...something that Basketball and Baseball fans often ask about.

So on one page it is indicated that parking is free yet on another it says parking is $5. This is going to cause a lot of confusion. I can see a lot of upset people.

Yes, that could be the situation. I can also see people being caught off-guard if it is cash only (hopefully they won't require "exact change only").

With the fan experience app, maybe in the near future fans can pay with their smart phones?

01-wingedeagle IMPO, this is a prime example of Non-Profit ACCOUNTING NEW SPEAK like Planned Parenthood's statement; "We are NOT making any PROFIT on the sale of these fetuses, we are just Covering our cost...." Kinda reminiscent of "Those are not the droids you are looking for..."
All three are each prime examples of smoke and mirrors MIND CONTROL at its best. 03-banghead

I think it's pretty clear that Rice Athletics loses money. So I don't see an issue with trying to increase revenue to reduce that number.
