Memphis paper: UCF offered QB Lynch, just before he signed with Memphis
It's behind a pay wall, so here's a short excerpt from the long article, published online last night:

Geoff Calkins: Memphis has a QB to believe in with Lynch
7:02 PM, Sep 3, 2015
9:03 PM, Sep 3, 2015
geoff calkins | football

Paxton Lynch woke up on that January day in 2012 intending to sign a scholarship with the University of Memphis...

Then the phone rang.

“It was UCF,” said David Lynch, Paxton’s father. “They had lost a quarterback to Auburn and were offering him a scholarship. They wanted Paxton to change his mind.”

The University of Central Florida campus is a 20-minute drive from the Lynch home. As David Lynch put it, “from that perspective, it was ideal.”

Paxton Lynch politely listened to the pitch from UCF. Then he signed his scholarship papers and faxed them to Memphis just as he had planned.

“He never wavered,” said David Lynch. “He was sticking with Memphis because that’s who really believed in him.” ...

Interesting insight. Clearly we made a mistake not correctly evaluating our own back yard.

Yeah, but so did almost everybody else. I think he only got a handful of offers. We were in dire straits at the time, in 2012.

You guys could have gotten him, probably easily, if you had been in early, but you had a QB recruit who went to Auburn late, so it's understandable.

I just thought it was an interesting coincidence. Lynch is now a redshirt junior, and is starting to get some attention toward playing in the NFL.

You never know.

Yeah, that was pretty well known at the time after we had that defection to Auburn. He didn't have much recruiting interest due to an early-season knee injury but blew up after a great performance in the Central Florida All-Star game. My neighbor's kid was his HS Center and told me they called him out of class that day to talk to UCF.

It will all be moot this year after UC knocks this kid into the next week...

Well, since GOL has publicly admitted Blake might have ended up at tight end, it's hard to crow about that from a recruiting perspective. Jeff Godfry was the prime QB recruit from that class.

Back to Lynch, that was more timing and circumstances as described above. You have to admire the kids for sticking with a commitment he hadn't made that long before.

BTW, it's twice the distance from his house to campus without any traffic.

Old news every UCF fan knows this. We were also under sanctions at the time so we needed someone to fall out to offer the kid. Worked out well for Memphis.

Okay, thanks. I have a subscription, so it's hard for me to tell. Usually there is one on all sports stories. Doesn't matter. I got the gist of the UCF angle, before it goes on to other subjects.

Interesting insight. Clearly we made a mistake not correctly evaluating our own back yard.

Lynch is an GOL type of player. Big kid that played QB in high school could be moved to other positions on the offensive side of the ball like TE or WR if needed.

That was the initial plan for Kyle Israel and Bortles....right?
