Toledo Football Game Cancelled
AP Story

Quote:TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The season opening contest between Stony Brook and Toledo was canceled due to severe weather on Thursday night.

The first-half weather delays totaled three hours and, after a shortened halftime, the game was stopped just before the third-quarter kickoff. It was called off after midnight.

According to a Toledo release, "The game will not be replayed and is officially listed as 'no contest.' Stats from the game will not count."

Toledo held a 16-7 lead after two quarters.

Will this effect the MAC standings in the event of a tie?

Will this effect bowl selection?

Let's not talk until after Saturday night.

It was just the first game.

Stony Brook is a pretty good FCS school I think. Anyway, Stony Brook scored first, and Toledo scored the last 16 points. They appeared to be getting things going after the first weather delays but before halftime.

Very happy we have seven home games this year since this one was a wash.

That's really not too unexpected. Most games that end up blowouts are far from that at the half. The second half is where the greater size and depth usually shows itself. Toledo was already up by 2 scores. They very likely would have pulled away in the second half.

I mean, who knows how it would have actually turned out? But I'd say 16-7 is a pretty acceptable halftime score if you're Toledo.

So does that mean the game would count for a full game suspension?

Why do so many of you care what they do with their suspensions? Same fricken question in like 4 threads.

Yes, they'll probably count the game for suspensions as would 99.9% of teams including NIU.

Man, what a giant pain that must have been to have the long delays and then have the game cancelled. I thought the rain in last year's Presby game was bad but at least we got that one in.

It looked to me like Toledo was starting to roll before half. The second half would have been a blowout.

1st question: MAC standings were there before the game and they will still be there today, even though the game was cancelled.

2nd Question: This will not cause any team to invited to a bowl game at this point in the season. That will happen much later.

Games do matter

From the link I posted earlier in the thread:

1. Head-to-head competition

a. In the event of a multiple-team (two or more teams) tie, the team with the best head-to-head record amongst the tied teams wins the tie-breaker.

b. In a two-team tie, head-to-head competition will be the first criteria.

c. If two teams did not play, the second criteria is used to break the tie.

2. Record of tied teams within the division [versus rank order, highest to lowest, of division teams]

a. The above tie-breaker procedure is used to determine rank order in the division.

b. Team(s) eliminated in the second tie-breaker criterion are not included in further consideration in the tie- breaking formula.

c. Head-to-head competition is again used to break the tie between the remaining tied teams.

3. Comparison of conference winning percentage of cross-over opponents of tied teams.

a. Tie-breaker is awarded to the team whose cross-division opponents had the best cumulative conference winning percentage.

b. Head-to-head competition is used to break the tie between the two tied teams.

4. If multiple teams remain tied, the final tie-breaker is as follows:

a. Record of tied teams versus cross-division opponents in rank order.

b. Head-to-head competition is used to break the tie between the two tied teams.

Of course no bowl invites are going out. But removing a weak team may increase SOS

This result likely won't matter in the grand scheme of things because it's a non-conference game. Unless Toledo's ungodly good this year and challenging for an Access Bowl spot, it probably won't be more than just a unique note in the future.

Stony Brook seems like a very fundamentally sound team, they just don't have much skill. I am not sure you can really take anything away from this game, I do think from what I saw Stony Brook would have been hard pressed to score again. Toledo had many dropped passes too.

Toledo was down 14-3 to New Hampshire with about 7 minutes left in the 2nd last season. Rockets won that one 54-20.

Boca always rationalizing...
UNH was better than SB. I wouldn't read too much into first games. Everyone is getting their feet wet. Also, seven mins is a lot of time... This game got to half time like this.
