Could you make a more vague statement?
In 2014 Vandy got throttled by a decent G5 Temple team 37-7, beat a bad G5 UMASS team by a FG, and a decent FCS Charleston Southern team by 1.
P5 schools usually pull away from g5 schools because P5 schools have superior athletes and depth.
I was impressed by the fact that at the end of the game, it was Western Kentucky wearing them down.
Typical P5 nonsense. Yes for the upper tier of P5, I agree. But not for the others and especially the bottom dwellers like Vandy

RE: The bar has been set for this...
Bottom line the WKU offense did not meet expectations last night.
The only thing that was "scary" is that the defense is clearly improved. The UAB transfers are immediate impact guys. The defense was young last year and is deeper, more talented, and more experienced this year.
The offense will come around. We had some injuries and maybe some opening night jitters. But if have even an "average" defense to go with that offense (as opposed to the dud that was last year) then we could be pretty good. Last night showed the potential for that to happen.

I loved how the SEC announcers continuously spun WKU's great defensive stances into "Vanderbilt mistakes". Duh....when you're intercepted, fail to get 1st downs on 3rd down, fail to get points in the red zone time after time, that is at a minimum the result of a good defense. Yes, occasionally these things are the result of unforced errors but in football, it's typically the result of defensive pressure.
We were in no way perfect on either side of the ball but Vanderbilt's inability to score at will was the result of an improved WKU defense.
On the other hand, WKU's lackluster offense had nothing to do with Vanderbilt's defense.
