Blankenship brings fresh ideas to Tiger staff (From the prodigy Tom Schad)
http://www.commercialappeal.com/sports/t...f_13146559

... Blankenship has filled a position that did not previously exist at Memphis but is relatively common across the country....

... Blankenship's analyst position does have restrictions, but not unlike any other non-coaching position on the football staff. The 58-year-old will primarily be a sounding board for the coaching staff and an advance scout during the week. While the Tigers' assistants are preparing for Saturday's game against Missouri State, for example, Blankenship is already studying next week's opponent, Kansas....

Love and trust Fuente, but not sold that this guy is a difference maker. Just don't know enough. That being said, I don't think it is a bad thing.

The difference makers are on the field, but this position and coach is an asset.

Schad continues to impress.

Blankenship is a great hire. One more set of eyes and tons of experience. Fuente keeps impressing with the quality of staff he has been able to obtain.

Let this one roll around in your head for a bit:

"For Blankenship, however, it was an opportunity to reunite with Fuente, and spend the season with a quickly rising program."

Having someone scouting the next opponent a week in advance while keeping the staff focused on the current opponent is an asset most teams already have. Now, we do too. It's progress.

It's great to see that we have a head football coach whose ego isn't so big that he can seek advice from a mentor. This is a good thing IMO.

Agreed we're making progress... Blankenship is working on the Kansas game plan this week while the field coaches are working on executing the Missouri State game plan this week. AWESOME!!

Another tool we didn't have last year!

Hope it works out.

Blankenship was 24-27 at Tulsa, 5-19 his last two seasons after Todd Graham's recruits were mostly gone.

Hopefully, he's a really good coach but just not a good recruiter.

Our other head coach is seeking advice from Kinkos on how to make better flash cards.

Some coaches just can't be the head guy. Way more to it than just Xs and Os. Norv Turner was a good offensive mind yet couldn't cut it as a head guy. Same thing will Arnsparger, Weiss and a whole list of others.

I kinda like the implication.

Fuente wants to hire a long-time mentor. The administration says, "Whatever you want, Coach! Here, we'll make a new position just for him. Happy?"

He's not giving advice. His job is to scout the next opponent.

Nope. Walton is a top assistant for the NBA champs. A pro team.
