RE: Mount McKinley renamed Denali
Liberals seethed when Florida gave "Cape Kennedy" back to its true name in the '70s. Interesting to see the reaction what will be here in a situation involving another assassinated president.

McKinley was a good man -- a better man, in fact, than most of his successors -- and his memory should be honored in various ways. But it doesn't necessarily have to be honored in this particular way.

I'm not bent out of shape about it. I'm sure they're plenty of stuff in Ohio they could name after him (and surely already are).

I also don't mind that they official name is what the locals have called it forever. McKinley may have been a fine man, but as presidents go, like Kennedy, he was nothing special. He just has the distinction of catching a bullet while in office.

I just thought it was interesting, and was curious to see what others here thought.

Doesn't matter to me. Alaskans favored it and Mckinley didn't have any actual tie to it anyway.

I really have no opinion on it, favorable or negative. If I ever go see it, it'll look the same regardless of its name.

I don't really care what the mountains are called, but the problem is: obviously Obama does. Is this really what's on his mind? Renaming mountains? Seriously?

The thing was here for eons without a name. It will eventually return to that status.

Frankly, I'd prefer he spent the remainder of his tenure dealing with stuff just like this than making actual policy decisions.

It will probably be the least controversial thing Obama does on his three day trip to Alaska. He will become the first sitting president to visit the Arctic Circle, and much of his visit will focus on climate change. As someone else said, Alaskans have wanted this change for decades, and the bill was sponsored by two Republican senators from Alaska.

He is trying to visit this city which is disappearing due to strong storms swallowing up the tiny island. But I don't think they have a safe way for him to get to the island.

I'd have to disagree with you on Kennedy.

Then by all means he should go. But he won't, not as comfy as his wonder bread hiatus on Tha Vinyawd.

So when does this fraud visit Tangier Island in Va.? Won't hold my breath.

"McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish–American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals."

"The United States annexed the independent Republic of Hawaii in 1898 and it became a U.S. territory."

Well, I think I found out why he's so keen on renaming it...

Too late.

A good friend of mine invited me to hunt with him one weekend last year. They have an engraved brass plate above the hunt camp outhouse door that declares you are entering the "Barack Obama ****house".

If I get the opportunity to hunt there again later this year I'll snap a picture.

Yeah, not a big deal. Pretty sure it will go the way of the Willis Tower in Chicago, you know, the one everyone still calls the Sears Tower.
