I know JMU was always interested in joining the sun belt. I'm kinda surprised they ended up with coastal

If I am not mistaken, JMU turned them down a few years back. Maybe some others have as well if they are now going after Big South celebrate athletic programs.

RE: Sun Belt Expansion
The JMU fans (at least many of them) wanted to join the SB but their Administration did not. The SB proffered an invite last summer leaving both sides plausible deniability and JMU declined. Officially JMU's Admin says no offer was made but everyone pretty much knows it was offered and turned down. So the SB moved on and JMU was left sitting on the side of the dance floor with no invites to dance.

I thought they might go with App State.

App State was already in at that point.

He meant he though they'd move up with App State when they moved up.

RE: Sun Belt Expansion
Ahh, sorry I missed that. In the end the Admins at JMU want to be higher up the food chain than the SB. I think their fans are now of the mind set to use any first step to work their way up to where they want to go. There are some real battles going on in JMU land and I really do not know how it will all work out in the end. That said I am so glad ETSU brought football back and I think the SC is a great fit for the return. Go Bucs!

Just reopens the wound a bit. I stead of making excuses and saying we can't had the administration put their nose to the grindstone and dedicated itself to being successful, that very well could've been ETSU.
Ultimately though, it's okay. The P5/G5 split is going to happen and that'll be ETSU'S chance to move up.

They need Valdosta St, West Georgia, and a couple of other Peach Belt teams to move up, and just take on KSU as a full member.

If Big South football is still around, maybe UNA if OVC continues to snub them:

RE: Sun Belt Expansion
Watching APP State last night had me thinking what could be. Say for instance the Sun Belt got rid of Idaho and New Mexico State (which will probably happen as they are just football only members) and ETSU and UTC joined.

Sun Belt South Division:

Appalachian State
Chattanooga
Coastal Carolina
ETSU
Georgia Southern
Georgia State

Sun Belt West Divison:

Arkansas State
Louisiana Lafayette
Louisiana Monroe
South Alabama
Texas State
Troy

ETSU
Ga Southern
Ga State
James Madison
Jacksonville St
South Ala
Troy
Western Carolina

That would be ideal. Getting aligned with those other schools somehow could be the first step of that.

That would be nice, but we gotta get that stadium built and improve our football team quickly, that's the only way we ever get into the Sun Belt.

Not a shot at the football program, but it's what is going to keep us in the SoCon for a long while.

The Sun Belt, to me, just does not move the needle. Besides, there's probably another NCAA reorganization coming. ETSU needs to be ready this time -- so building a solid program in the storied SoCon needs to be the focus.

Agreed. I'm always for aspiring to be better, but we need to crawl before we walk. Have the goal of becoming a premier national FCS power, that puts ETSU in a much better position when the next round of seismic NCAA shifting and realignment happens. Plus...moves "upward" aren't always for the better. It depends on each schools' situation. Don't want to advance yourself into obscurity.

In this case it will be. There will be another split in the next decade. Power 5 teams are going to continue to not want to share money with schools like Memphis, MTSU, UL-Monroe, etc... So they'll split off again. At that point, another window will open for teams to move up to what is currently the group of five conferences. That's the window where we'll see ETSU, Liberty, UTC, EKU, James Madison, Richmond, Kennesaw State, most of the Missouri Valley football conference and the Big Sky. Maybe at that point those conferences realign to better suit geography, maybe they don't. They should. There's no real reason for Idaho to be traveling to Mobile, Alabama for anything related to a conference game.

RE: Sun Belt Expansion
Watching James Madison drill Sam Houston in the FCS playoff game in the beautiful JMU stadium. Again, did the Sun Belt try to get JMU before inviting Coastal? Where will JMU end up? Don't guess I'll ever get over what Stanton and Mullins did to ETSU athletics while schools like JMU, App State, et al soared.
