That would actually be an interesting discussion. We would need some really old heads to chime in though to compile the list.
Nichols went 9 PPG and 4 RPG his freshman year, and 13/6 last year.

I went through Trip's Tigers rosters, and compiled this list. Many couldn't play their freshman year, and it's hard to compare without seeing stats, and I sure as hell don't remember stats, so I just listed all the solid players that fit the description.

Those with asterisks, I KNOW would be ranked ahead of Nichols. The others are decent possibilities. And I could have a hiccup here and there. Going strictly by memory.

Forrest Arnold*
Jack Butcher*
Win Wilfong*
Orby Arnold*
James Hockaday*
Skip Wolfe*
George Price
Lowery Kirk*
Hunter Beckman*
Wayne Yates
George Kirk
Bob Neumann*
Gene Wilfong
John Hillman*
Mike Butler*
Herb Hilliard*
Bill Laurie
Wes Westfall*
Hank McDowell
Jon Albright
John Wilfong
Marvin Alexander
Sylvester Gray

Todd Mundt

Not that any of this matters, but it's interesting to discuss. Problem is, obviously, most of the non-African-American stars were back in the old days, and those of us who saw them play are fast fading.

Um, the two bolded would not qualify.

That is why i said we would need older folks to chime in. In my lifetime the white star is rare indeed.

Appreciate the list.

I said there could be some hiccups (especially LATER, b/c I was overseas working a lot during that period).

But as far as being older, um, I'm just south of 70, and started attending Tiger games in 1952, so I definitely saw all those guys play, except for Alexander, Gray and Mundt. So I could have stopped with Wilfong.

The only thing I'm not sure of are the stats of the ones I didn't asterisk from earlier. I just remember they were prominent players, and 9 or 13 PPG and 4-6 RPG (for F) were definitely in the ball park.

Good reaction. You KNOW he isn't serious.

But it gives me a good excuse to discuss the old time players that most people here aren't old enough to recall.

Most skilled Tiger big in the last 10 years...

But Dorsey and Tarik may have NBA careers while Nichols may not, we'll have to wait and see....

Agreed. Austin may be a player without a position, given his height, weight, and skill set.

And the skill set could still change. He's a young man.

Angel Garcia may have had more "skills". The injuries took their toll. Shawne Williams is basically the same size as Austin. I'd say he's more skilled as well.

Shawne came here with the ability to hit the 3...am I remembering that correctly? And it has served him well in the NBA. IMO, Austin's time in the NBA will depend on his ability to hit the 3.

Bret Mundt had two left feet, and his highly touted brother rode the bench most of the time. Bret ended up being the better of the two for us. And how could you leave Bill Cook off that list, Triple A?!?! LOL A home-grown talent!

The first guy I actually remember watching and noticing his being good was George Kirk. He was a senior the year I started following the Tigers. Still remember the announcer talking about how smart a player he was.

Austin is a talented ball player -- there's no doubt about it. He'll probably get better. Too bad it won't be in a Tiger uniform, but life goes on. I do think he'd be in the top 15 aforementioned category, all time. He was that good, in my opinion.

LOL. I left off Cook b/c I was doing it completely from memory, except for skimming the rosters. Guess I missed his name. I'm thinking it's a pretty stout list, but I could have missed a few others, too.
