Is Temple becoming a football school?
For years I used to laugh at the Temple supporters that thought that Temple was a football school. Before the year was out they would all admit to me that bball was indeed Temple's lead sport. There were seasons in which bball knocked off powerhouse teams such as Duke, Kansas and so on. The team would follow this up with a deep run to the Final 8.

We would all wonder when football would ever turn things around when it comes to wins, fans and winning over a skeptical Temple admin.

I have to say that I have always wanted both sports do do well. But now I have to admit that the momentum is starting to swing towards football.

Football is the reason why Temple is in the AAC. Coach K at Duke wanted Temple basketball in his conference. However Temple football was not viewed as an attractive addition.

The TU president in a welcome to incoming freshmen mentioned football related things several times. There was also a pep rally video shown to the freshman that featured all of the sports teams but football seemed most prominent.

The various coaches from each team was introduced and the football coach came out last and was the only coach to speak (years ago it would have been Coach Chaney doing that).

I got to give Coach Rhule credit, he is one heck of a motivator and a salesman ...
There are only a few tickets left at the 70k Linc for the big Penn State showdown next week.

Perhaps Temple will prove that they are indeed a football school ...

I can only speak for my self, but I have been putting Tiger football and baseball ahead of basketball for 50 years now.

You may be correct! Temple has yet to even make the NCAA Tournament as a member of the AAC. Football seems on the rise though.

I don't think you become a football school by having one good year.

USF made it to March Madness recently.... Does that make them a Basketball school??? No, they are a Football school because that is what they are know for.

When I think Temple Athletics... I think Basketball. I imagine the rest of the nation agrees with me.

"Is Temple becoming a football school?"

As in most things, if you have to actually the ASK the question the answer is probably "NO."

I wouldn't consider it to be presently, but you did say "becoming a football school" and that can only happen with a swing in the culture of campus. If they're giving football the priority and they do go ahead and build a football stadium on campus, it very well could become one!

Going to be harder to make it a football school these days. Would have been much easier when West Virginia, Syracuse, Pitt, Miami and Virginia Tech coming to town.

RE: Is Temple becoming a football school?
One thing that I forgot to mention is that the local media coverage has increased dramatically for Temple football. I would say that there are 10 Temple football stories written for each Penn State story. Unlike in the past, there is almost no Rutgers, Syracuse or Pitt stories in the newspaper. College football coverage by the local media is now 90% Temple whereas in the past it may have been 30% Temple.

It's an exciting time to be a Temple football supporter. A win next week would lay the ground work for this to be the best season ever for Temple. I do feel that even if we lose a few games, if we make to a bowl game the momentum will continue.

Now a bad season such as 5-7 would be a setback considering all of the seniors that we will lose.
My point is that we have a loaded team and a schedule where we can make some noise on the national scene.

Yeah, not like USC was instrumental in building the stadium, the stadium isn't across the street from USC, and USC hasn't played in it since it opened or anything

tell that to pitt (the top team in the nation from the mid 20's to mid 30's and aswell in the early 80's)

tell that to miami (top team in the nation in the late 80's and early 2000's)

You start doing what USC has done (minus the cheating!!) and I will retract.

RE: Is Temple becoming a football school?
The answer is no. I can point to a number of reasons that are too obvious.... Can you guys even imagine football schools like Ohio St, Michigan Notre Dame etc. NOT having a football stadium?? Build an OCS, get 50k to all your games and have 10 straight winning seasons. Then you can call Temple a football school. When I think of Temple two things come to mind: 1.Temple Hoops. 2.the only school I've ever heard of being kicked out of an athletic conference for lack of success and support. Cheers!
