Benkert Out

What happened exactly? Was this a non-contact injury?

Yep. Word is he was just running a little option play, planted wrong and it popped.

Scary how that can happen and change and entire season.

I blame these non contact ACL tears and achilles pops on over lifting. The muscles get too strong for the ligaments and tendons to handle and they just pop. The body needs a chance to rest and athletes these days never stop lifting.

Interesting article on Bonesville: http://www.bonesville.net/Articles/Brett..._Brett.htm

Quote:If Kemp was going to be the man, his coach would have come right out and said so. Instead, McNeill dropped the latest in a series of hints since the end of spring practice that neither he nor Nichol are sold on the Arizona native’s ability to lead the team.

Further indication of that is the decision to bring in walk-on transfer Philip Nelson just before the start of fall camp.

...

It’s not known whether ECU has filed for an NCAA waiver that would allow Nelson to play for the Pirates this season. Even if he is granted immediate eligibility, it’s doubtful he’d be ready to play right away having not taken a single snap in either of the team’s preseason scrimmages.

It’s a drawback he shares with junior Cody Keith, who despite being fully recovered from the elbow surgery that cost him the entire 2014 season, has been sidelined for most of camp with a foot injury. He has only recently returned to practice.

Because of Keith's lack of preparation time and questions about his post-surgical arm strength, the most logical choice to take the first snap in Benkert’s place is the quarterback that on the surface might seem like the most illogical choice — true freshman John Jacobs.

Well the answer is both. He was a very good JUCO QB in terms of stats (threw for about 350 ypg and at a completion % of 65%), but he also had no FBS offers and we signed him after signing day because 2 HS QB's stiffed us in January of that year. There are things to like about him, but serious questions about his arm strength. It's probably not the most important thing in our offense, but I'm concerned it's too weak for the FBS level.

375 yards at 65%, and you could say the same thing about Carden who we picked up a week before the signing date with no offers. Who even cares at this point. He's still here for a reason, that's all that really matters.

If he sucks so bad they would have moved him on out, certainly not redshirted a JUCO and have him taking snaps with the first team all fall with other recruited QB's on the scout team. 247 also listed Kemp as having an offer to Air Force I believe as well. He also broke his collar bone in the last game of his season which required surgery on which likely had some schools iffy.

Stupid conjecture. Wait Nelson couldn't start immediately because he's not taken a snap in a scrimage LOL. Dude started 2 years in the big 10. But he thinks Jacobs could. WTF.

First off you bring in any player if you can get them like Nelson with size athletic ability and experience as a WALK ON. He could help us at numerous positions even if he never takes a snap at QB.

If you really want to play that angle, maybe they didn't feel good about Benkurt, not Kemp or back ups who were likely never going to play. That's how I would read that one if you want to look at it from that point of view and the fact you probably chances are not even need your back up. Otherwise why even attempt to mess with Benkurt's confidence and get him looking over his shoulder if he was so sure the man future and only a sophmore.

Ruff not immediately naming a starter means nothing either. He didn't even name Dom Davis starter over Wornick and the guy just got injuried 2 days ago. Gezz. I'd rather us never have named a starter and just give us an advantage.

If Jacobs is close with the others start him, yeah fine there is always value in going with the young guy but the fact he's been with the scout team clearly indicates he's not been at this point.

Tendons and ligaments also get stronger from lifting. I doubt that is the issue. Athletes have limited time in the weightroom. It isn't likely that overtraining is the issue here.

It's pretty clear to me that Benkurt's injury is a result of the NFL preseason being too long.

Vote who should be the starter for ECU against Towson.

McNeill: Blake Kemp would start at QB if opener were tomorrow

http://eastcarolina.247sports.com/Bolt/M...w-39008980

Outside of Benkert, Kemp has received the most first-team reps in practice this preseason by a wide margin to this point. That said, an official starter for the opener may not be named until next week.

“Blake is ready to go,” McNeill said to Pirate Radio. “He’s doing well. Cody Keith is coming back from injury. I’m looking forward to everyone around them stepping up.”

True freshman John Jacobs is currently third in line, while JUCO transfer James Summers – a tremendous athlete who could get a shot at quarterback – was just cleared on Friday afternoon to begin practicing, according to sources.

so he pretty much got it by default...injured for the year, recovering from injury, true freshmen and just cleared to play are his only competition

Yeah pretty much. I expect to see Keith play in the Towson game, and hopefully one of the 2 steps up, but I'd be pretty surprised if Kemp didn't start now.

If Summers is truly practicing with the team, I would not be surprised if he was the starter by the Navy game. Wasn't he one of the top 10 QBs in the country when he committed to UNC?

(Btw, to my Pirate brethren who are always ripping Marshall, have fun explaining to their trolls why Summers is at ECU...)

That's fair but I do think the guy has potential. Lincoln Riley was high on him and he seems like an intelligent guy (which is usually key for our system of quick decision making). From the highlights below, he appears to be somewhat mobile and he has enough of an arm to be successful (Carden didn't have the strongest arm). I have a feeling that he will surprise and I'm certainly not giving up on the season yet. He did have gaudy numbers in JC as well as HS.
