Like Slovakia!

What has Slovakia done? I have ancestry from that region. One of my relatives purchased me a membership in a Slovakian ancestry group.

Slovakia said they will only take Christians, no muslims.

Zero tolerance is the best way to cover your bases.

Thank you.

Jan Sobieski. He saved Vienna in 1683.

Dang it. I knew that. The Battle of Vienna is one of my favorite campaigns in history. Thanks for the none snarky response.

You can add John Hunyadi, Skanderbeg, Stephen the Great, and a host of others to that list. All great men and fighters, who should be more known.

Well, I hope the fact you were happy I wasn't a prick isn't indicative of how I act speak on here most of the time.

04-cheers

I studied at the University of Vienna so learning all about the Ottoman incursions into the Balkans and the subsequent effect on Eastern Europe was a must.

No, not at all. I probably would have taken the opportunity to spread the snarky. 04-cheers

You were very fortunate to study overseas. It is reassuring to see that some countries still stress the danger of Ottoman invasions.

My AP European History class never covered the Ottomans or the Balkans until the ruckus in the 1990's. I had to search out and study the conflicts on my own.

Well, good!

It's certainly one of the most interesting periods in the history of Europe over the last 500 years.

And the most underappreciated and Europe (and the world) are still dealing with the aftermath.

There are other concerns in Germany. For one, the German government is worried that neo-facists are being incited by the immigrant Muslims. Understand, they are not so much worried by the Muslim influx as by the backlash to the Muslims.

Second, many German Jews are concerned by the vicious brand of antisemitism that the Muslim immigrants carry with them.

RE: Germans and French worry about illegal immigration
Germany doesn't surprise me.

Back when I was stationed in Germany the Turks owed a lot of restaurants around American military communities and were the "looked down upon" ethnic group by some Germans -- and even back in the late 80s, early 90s when I was stationed there, there were plenty of skinheads, neo-nazi types and extreme nationalists and you're run across them from time to time at fests and soccer games and so on.

In fact, one of the only German jokes I ever heard that was actually funny was a joke about the Turks.
Basically, it went like this -- been 20-plus years since I heard or told it -- so, it's kinda paraphrased.

A Turkish family moved to a small town near Frankfurt and wanted to become German citizens, so they went to the local city hall and asked the city clerk how to make that happen. The clerk pointed out the window of city hall at the Main River and said, "if you can swim across that river, you'll become a German citizen."
The father Turk said great, I'll swim first. He jumped in and swam the river, but it wasn't easy because the river is wide and has a swift current. Then the mother jumped in and, after going under a few times, made it across. They celebrated becoming Germans.
Then it was the oldest son's turn. He had some difficulties, but just made it. Then the middle son's turn came and he barely made it. Then it was time for the young son and the grandparents, who had stayed on the other bank to help the youngster make it. They all jumped in together and started swimming hard as they could, but they couldn't get across and all three drowned in the middle of the Main River.
The mother Turk was beside herself and cried and moaned and shrieked -- "this is so terrible, this is so terrible, our children, your mother and father, all drowned."
The father Turk looked at her, shrugged and said, "**** it, who cares. They're just Turks."

Disclaimer: The Turks I dealt with were pretty cool. And they made good pizza.

Well, Germany doesn't exactly have the best history for treating outsiders equally. I can see the govt's concern. However, that concern shouldn't out weigh concerns for its own people.

I lived in Germany for a while.

The Turks were a mixed bunch. A lot of assholios, but the ones that owned businesses were usually fine.
