Lines in the Sand (C-USA)- Week 1
With continuing thanks to PirateTreasureNC, who started this tradition over a decade ago, it's time to publish the second annual installment of Lines in the Sand -- a weekly "pick-em" poll of all C-USA games. As last year, this will be a straight up pick (although I'll try to publish latest point spreads for informational purposes). Just pick the winner. I'll keep track of both weekly and cumulative winners and announce them at the end of all games for the week.

Last season, nastybunch was our season leader in correct picks, and won that coveted title, going away in the last week. Can he repeat? If he does, or doesn't, this weekly contest generated some interesting pre-game discussions. Here's hoping that continues. As with last year, I'll accept entries up until kick off. If you submit an entry past any games' kick off, that games (and any prior games) will not count in the final tally. That seemed to work well, last year.

There are 12 games on tap this week (North Texas is off). Point spreads this week are from http://www.oddsshark.com/ncaaf/bowl-odds.

Thursday, September 3

FIU @ UCF (-16.5); 6:00 ET; CBSSN
Western Kentucky @ Vanderbilt (-1.5); 8:00 ET; SEC Network; Watch ESPN
UTSA @ Arizona (-31.5); 10:00 ET; PAC12 Network;

Friday, September 4
Charlotte @ Georgia State (-5.5); 3:30 PM; ESPNU, WatchESPN

Saturday, September 5
Old Dominion (-7) @ Eastern Michigan; 3:00 ET; ESPN3
Wagner @ Rice (NL); 3:30 ET; American SN
FAU @ Tulsa (-7.5); 3:30 ET; CBSSN
UTEP @ Arkansas (-33); 3:30 ET; ESPNU, WatchESPN
Southern @ LaTech (NL); 7:00 ET; American SN
Jackson State @ Middle Tennessee (NL); 7:00 ET: No TV posted
Mississippi State (-23.5) @ Southern Miss; 10:00 ET; FoxS1

Sunday, September 6
Purdue @ Marshall (-7.5); 3:00 ET; FoxS1

Have fun, folks!

RE: Lines in the Sand (C-USA)- Week 1
My picks for the week are:

FIU @ UCF - would love to see the upset, but will be tough at Bright House field
Western Kentucky @ Vanderbilt - Toppers must win if they are going to start living up to billings
UTSA @ Arizona - best bet for RoadRunners is to keep it close
Charlotte @ Georgia State - want to pick 49ers, but GAST has more experience
Old Dominion @ Eastern Michigan - must win for the Monarchs and C-USA
Wagner @ Rice - easy win for the Owls.
FAU @ Tulsa - not at all sure about this pick. Tulsa has new coach
UTEP @ Arkansas - see comments on UTSA game
Southern @ LaTech - should be an easy win
Jackson State @ Middle Tennessee - Another easy win
Mississippi State @ Southern Miss - but Golden Eagles will play tough for three quarters
Purdue @ Marshall - Herd needs to take this with new QB

Overall C-USA will go 7-5.

RE: Lines in the Sand (C-USA)- Week 1
C-USA grabs eight wins in the opening week. Some impressive -- some not so much.

And kudos to whoever did the schedule for UNT. You guys start with an open date followed by SMU. The Mean Green is guaranteed to be undefeated going into a week-three showdown with Rice!

Thursday, September 3

FIU @ UCF; If this was a home game for the Panthers, I might be tempted to go with them. Alas, it’s not. UCF wins this one.
Western Kentucky @ Vanderbilt; WKU gets the season off to a good start. The Hilltoppers win going away.
UTSA @ Arizona; Sorry, Roadrunners. Arizona wins and it will not be close.

Friday, September 4

Charlotte @ Georgia State; Well – it is Georgia State, and Charlotte opens with an upset. The 49ers win this one.

Saturday, September 5

Old Dominion @ Eastern Michigan; ODU opens big on the road. Monarchs win, and it's not close.
Wagner @ Rice (NL); Speaking of not close. Rice wins big in this warmup before their real OOC schedule starts.
FAU @ Tulsa; The AAC goes down as FAU survives the Hurricane in a big, opening upset. The Owls win at Tulsa.
UTEP @ Arkansas; A tough on-the-road opener for sure. UTEP gives it a good go, but the Razorbacks win this one going away.
Southern @ LaTech; This is easy. The Bulldogs win in a “no contest”.
Jackson State @ Middle Tennessee; Another easy one as MT takes no prisoners. The Blue Raiders win going away in their home opener.
Mississippi State @ Southern Miss; I would really like to take the Eagles, and I do think they beat the spread, but cowbells will be ringing when this one is over. The Bulldogs win.

Sunday, September 6
Purdue @ Marshall; Marshall puts it to a pretty bad (but P5) Purdue team. The Herd wins.

Thanks for reminding me. The season is almost here, I need to get my AAC one up!

How is oddshark? I saw you are using that.

RE: Lines in the Sand (C-USA)- Week 1
To keep from going chalk (FBS should be favored over all FCS), I'll pick two dogs to win and a few failures to cover

FIU @ UCF (-16.5)---UCF wins and covers
Western Kentucky @ Vanderbilt (-1.5)---WKU wins and beats the spread (redundant)
UTSA @ Arizona (-31.5)---UA wins and wins big

Charlotte @ Georgia State (-5.5)---GaState wins and covers (maybe first time as FBS?)

Old Dominion (-7) @ Eastern Michigan---ODU wins by 28
Wagner @ Rice (NL)---Rice wins by 30
FAU @ Tulsa (-7.5)---Tulsa wins by 8, FAU fights hard
UTEP @ Arkansas (-33)---Arkansas wins, fails to cover
Southern @ LaTech (NL)---LaTech wins by 4 TDs
Jackson State @ Middle Tennessee (NL)---upset alert JaxState by 3
Mississippi State (-23.5) @ Southern Miss---MissState wins, Golden Eagles keep it close

Purdue @ Marshall (-7.5)---Marshall wins, doesn't cover

UTSA @ Arizona - Runaway win for Arizona....51 - 17
Charlotte @ Georgia State - Georgia State wins a close one at home....21 - 17
Old Dominion @ Eastern Michigan - ODU wins a track meet.....62 - 48
Wagner @ Rice - Owls win in a laugher....45 - 3
FAU @ Tulsa - Because Tulsa has a new coach, FAU wins 28 - 24.....
UTEP @ Arkansas - Hogs win 48 - 21
Southern @ LaTech - Tech struggles early but pulls away late...35 - 14.
Jackson State @ Middle Tennessee - Jackson State gives them a run for their money, but MTSU wins 31 - 27.
Mississippi State @ Southern Miss - Golden Eagles much better this year, but State wins this one with an interception late for a TD.....35 - 28. Quarterback controversy is born...

LOL....We will soon see. They were #80 in total D last yr. That fires me up. Think Isaw where we were top 25 in passing and rushing. I can see a jump for them this yr but not a leap. Herd is easily 7 pts better at home than road. But USM already knows that I'm sure.
