RE: AAC vs Mt. West
(08-20-2015 01:22 PM)ECUHOO Wrote:  Since both the MT. West and the AAC are making claims to be the 6th strongest football conference behind the P-5, I decided to evaluate each conference's pre-season rankings to compare the conferences. (Yes, I know it is preseason, but it is revealing.

I used the SB Nation preseason rankings to compare the two conferences. Other pre-season rankings are close enough to the SB Nation pre-season poll to yield very similar results. I took the ranking of each team in each conference, added them together and divided that number by twelve to get the average ranking of the teams in that conference.

The rankings of the teams in the Mt. West produced a total of 1040 points which yielded an average ranking of 86. On the other hand, the AAC had a total of 928 points which yielded an average ranking of 77.

The distribution of the rankings in each conference is interesting. While Boise State is a preseason rank of 26, they only have three teams ranked under 70. The AAC has 7 teams ranked under 70.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Mt. West has 5 teams ranked over 100 while the AAC has only 3.

Without Boise State, the Mt. West would be significantly below the AAC. And given the effort and money that UConn, Tulane, Tulsa and SMU are putting into their respective programs, it is not unreasonable to believe that the gap between the two conferences will continue to spread over the years.

I will redo this analysis at the end of the year for comparison. GO AAC!!!!

It will be interesting to see how this will look in a few years. The BSU special TV deal made to keep them in the MWC means have been & will be getting a LOT more money than the other teams. This will only cause a greater divide in the MWC.

I really doubt the MWC can poach anyone, at least not from the AAC. The MWC set up a very uneven TV revenue distribution system that HEAVILY favors BSU.

No AD in his right mind would agree to move to a conference where they would have an immediate & permanent financial disadvantage to another team.

Get BYU on board with poaching the Mountain West, then go after Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, San Diego State, and UNLV (one of these likely gets left out). With Air Force and Navy on board, go after Army and split into 3 geographical divisions of 6 and a military academy division of 3. That's the closest we are going to get to P5-level money, media coverage, and consideration for the CFP and bowl games.

Do this with or without BYU. It might be easier to convince some of the MWC schools to join if BYU were involved; however, I don't think BYU is ready to do anything like this right now - unless it were Olympic sports only with a football scheduling agreement. And that might be a non-starter.

Instead, start with the military angle. Warm Air Force and Army to the idea of conference affiliation with Navy in the AMERICAN. Perfect fit. CIC trophy = division winner. With Air Force and Navy in the mix, SDSU and Colorado St. become viable. Then, the rest will fall into place. The hardest part might be to figure out the 6th team for the Central division or to convince CSU or New Mexico to part of the Central division - if BYU joins.

EAST: Cincy, ECU, Temple, UConn, UCF, USF
CENTRAL: Houston, Memphis, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, TBD (NIU?)
WEST: Boise St., Colorado St., Fresno St., New Mexico, SDSU, UNLV
ARMED FORCES: Air Force, Army, Navy

For the typical schedule, play 5 division games, and then 1 game against each other division. For the ARMED FORCES division, play 2 division games, 4 aligned games (Army-EAST, Navy-CENTRAL, Air Force-WEST), and 1 game against each non-aligned division.

Also, consider to have schedule agreements with BYU and Hawaii (who goes independent). This gets BYU and Hawaii away games on the American media deal (enhancing its value) and could help ensure the Hawaii and Las Vegas bowls go to the AAC.

* C-USA or Sun Belt pick up the rest of the MWC leftovers in their western divisions.

For basketball, it really could help to add BYU for Olympic sports. With 20 teams, you could have four 5-team divisions.

EAST: ECU, Temple, UConn, UCF, USF
CENTRAL: Cincy, Memphis, Tulane, Tulsa, TBD (NIU?)
SOUTH: SMU, Houston, New Mexico, CSU, Air Force
WEST: Boise, BYU, Fresno, SDSU, UNLV

Play 8 division games (H-H) and 10 games rotating through the other divisions. 18 games total. Bball tournament would be tremendous, with 4 division winners and some awesome potential matchups.

OR, have the TBD Central team (NIU?) for football only and keep the East, Central, and West divisions from football - slide New Mexico into the Central and AFA into the West.

Some Olympic sports could stay almost entirely within division if that is really necessary to limit travel - but the basketball schedule formula could also work well.

UNLV should get better considerably over the next few years! I don't mind the MWC teams and their fans because you guys do not boast your conference as something holy like some people on this board...

No, NIU aside, no teams would agree to that. Do you even know the travel expenses associated with a conference like that?

What I like the best about the AAC over the MW,correct me if I am wrong, the AAC has more income and TV exposure in both basketball and football. Also I like the two primary time zones we operate in,Eastern and Central and the quality and quantity of athletes that we recruit from Texas to Florida and up the East Coast!

No SMU? Not happening.

And whoever said there are MWC teams putting more into their facilities and staff than SMU doesn't know whats been done and whats coming. I don think you have a national "6th" conference without both Houston and SMU.

I just want to say there's been some precedent of SMU being left behind lately...1996 the SWC 4 left SMU for the Big 12. 1998, the WAC 8 left SMU for the MWC. 2001, TCU left SMU behind for CUSA, TCU, Army, Louisville, Cincinnati and USF plus 4 basketball schools left CUSA 1 season before SMU joined and about 100 schools left the Big East shortly after SMU joined. I'm guessing life would go on at SMU after a period of "you're out of your mind leaving us!"--kind of talk. Take it from a fan of a school that's always last in line for a conference invite, a conference that's always our 4th choice. You'll get over it! You always have! Cheers!

Wouldn't be much different than what we currently pay. The average distance to conference members for Houston is nearly 1000 miles.
