I agree with Marge. Kids today care about what teams have done recently, last 10-15 years. ND core fan base is older. Yeah ND played for a title but they got smoked. ND brand is still solid but it is fading.

RE: Notre Dame has lost independent luster.
The thing that I think is missed is Notre Dame independence is only somewhat related to their revelence. Any big time program could be an independent if they had the desire (it's hard, but do-able).

Further, Notre Dame's identity both to alumni/fans and to football audiences/Notre Dame haters is tied to independence. If they lose it and join a conference for football, they will lose luster, not regain it as they'll lose that one feature which really sets them apart from everyone else.

Independence has nothing to do with their luster. It's the actually quality of the program that's losing luster.

+1. I have to agree with this. Once upon a time independents played a much stronger schedule than conference members, but I don't think that's the case any more and I don't think kids today value independence at all. It's all about the quality of the program, which is still well above average but not top 10 like it once was.

None of the P5 conferences will want their champion to be bump out of the playoff by Norte Dame the independent. And that will be the ACCs stance also. So Notre Dame will be forced to join a conference, if it wants to participate in the playoff for the national Champion. I suspect at that point Notre Dame joins the ACC for Football.

Now with all the above said, the only wretch in the engine that could void all this is an eight team playoff, which would give Notre Dame a place as an independent. 07-coffee3

I repeat the above. 07-coffee3

I don't know what Independence is gaining them as far as perception....

Frankly, after about 10 years of an ACC schedule, and playing the likes of Clemson, Georgia Tech, FSU, Miami, and VT, I think the ACC will grow on them

Notre Dame and FSU have the ingredients for a strong rivalry, going back to the '93 season. There's no love-loss between Miami and ND: Catholics vs. Convicts.

This year, Notre Dame matches up with Clemson and Georgia Tech....those games will be huge!
