They're expensive for a public though. If you are a SC resident and live on campus, you're looking at about $23,000 for tuition, room and board, and books.

Hard to believe how much college costs have gone up since I was in school. I lived on campus my freshman year with a meal plan and I think the total bill was around $11,000.

You clearly have no idea WTF you are talking about.

Clemson and Winthrop were established around the same time by Governor Ben Tillman because the University of South Carolina was not fulfilling it's mission of educating the citizens of South Carolina, instead serving as the almost exclusive realm of society's elite. Winthrop was founded as an all female teacher's college (thus the sister) and Clemson was founded after Thomas Green Clemson, former diplomat and US Superintendent of Agriculture under James Buchanan, left his plantation to the state for the establishment of an agricultural and mechanical college.

What is now the University of South Carolina fought the establishment of both schools tooth and nail, thus both Winthrop and Clemson are independent of the South Carolina system. Neither Clemson nor Winthrop (or The Citadel, SC State, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Francis Marion, or Lander for that matter) have to "ask" permission of South Carolina for anything.


Winthrop has a total enrollment of just over 6k students, Clemson close to 22k....thus the little.
