Big Ten Network Reports NIU Best Football Tearm in Illinois (per CBS)
NIU in good company with MSU and ND in displacing B1G teams as best college football team in their own state.

Per B1G Network CBS Sports picked NIU over Illinois and Northwestern as best college football team in Illinois.

MSU picked over Michigan, and ND over Purdue and Indiana for those states.

MSU is Big Ten. Granted, not as big as Michigan, but still Big Ten.

It was cool to see the Huskie logo superimposed over Illinois on that map thing they put out. Nice work by NIU!

But, LOL, you can't displace a Big Ten team when you ARE a big ten team. It also amuses me that you imply it's some kind of victory for Notre Dame to be considered the best team in Indiana when their competition is the Boilermakers and the Hoosiers!

Give the Irish credit. They were able to pull it off anyway. Keep in mind that ND is also in the same state as Ball State.

ECU has at the very least an argument for best NC FBS team; they beat North Carolina in back to back seasons, beat NCST the last time they played in 2013 and beat VT last year as well. Should have been picked for their state.

Yes NIU is in good company with ND with each displacing two B1G teams in their home state - this gives WMU something to aspire to accomplish in Michigan.

I would contend of the three states it hardest to be best in Michigan and easiest to be best in Indiana.

I realize this thread overlaps with the "Best college football team by state" thread but the angle of getting the coverage from B1G Network that NIU is best in Illinois seemed Huge to me (pun intended).

I would say it's hard to be the best in Michigan, oh yeah. Illinois is probably the easiest for a G5 with Illinois never getting a good coach, and NW being NW. Indiana isn't super easy, because although being better than Indiana is, you've got 3 P5s to compete with -- including Notre Dame. If you're as good as Notre Dame (which is usually going to require being ranked consistently), Notre Dame is still going to get the nod because they're ND.

Pennsylvania wouldn't be amazingly difficult IMO. Penn State & Pitt to compete with.
