I remember those gosh awful "UC" letters on the side of the helmets.
I still think that was the most crowded congested games at Nippert. You could not move at the game, people everywhere.
Yep. Of course, capacity was only 26k at that time, but it was overflowing.
Obviously overmatched, but watching some of that reminded me how often we would shoot ourselves in the foot in those days.
We started the 1986 season in great fashion on the road giving Virginia Tech who won the Peach Bowl that year one of only two losses for them. Then we beat Miami Ohio but then our season pretty much fell apart.
We also lost to eventual national champion Penn State due to a late fumble. Reggie Taylor and Danny McCoin could get it going. Alex Gordon must have had a 10 year career with the Jets.
Trips to Happy Valley were certainly the best and worst of times. Big win in 1983 and if we had held on to that 1986 game that would have been one of our greatest wins but a later trip in the nineties we took our largest beating ever 0-81.
Loved going to that Miami game in '86. Wife (at that time girlfriend) and I were at the game, and the guys behind us kept chanting "Die you gravy sucking pigs"

We almost beat PSU at Riverfront............85'?
It was 92' when we almost beat them at Nippert when it reopened 20-24. We lost the 85' game 10-31.

In 1986 we lost to eventual national champ Penn State 23-17 at Penn State. Not sure if we played them in 85. Was not in school yet.

I thought it was closer than that, lol. Maybe PSU added a couple of scores late? I was at the 92' game. PSU RB/FB from Cincy had a nice TD run later in the game that hurt.
I was at a game against Penn State in Happy Valley in 1989. I think we lost something like 45-9, scoring a TD on a blocked punt and using another blocked punt to either get a safety or a FG.
But the Penn State people gave us all we cared to eat and drink for free just for making the trip. Good time.

That was my freshman year, I think Brad Notacker picked off a pass for a touchdown, and it was all down hill after that. Notacker and a bunch of other players were always hanging out in Daniels Hall, one of them was dating my girlfriends roommate at the time. We called him no tackle, but not to his face of course.

I remember how excited everyone was for McCoins senior season, the university sent out coins to Heisman voters, but he ended up not having the year everyone expected. Still was a fun QB to watch.

Quote:Cincinnati played and defeated LSU 28-0 in Baton Rouge in a January 1898 postseason matchup, predating the Rose Bowl by four years
Brent Musberger lied to you. The Rose Bowl is not technically "the Granddaddy of them All." According to Michael MacCambridge's masterpiece College Football Encyclopedia, the Bearcats played in a bowl game in 1898. The challenger was the Southern Athletic Club, who invited them to New Orleans for a January 6 matchup. With a ragtag squad of 14 players and coaches, the Bearcats prevailed 16-0.
Here's where things get bizarre. While the UC players were throwing a victory party, some LSU players allegedly showed up and challenged the Bearcats to a game. And a few days later, LSU was blanked by Cincinnati to the tune of 28-0.
Perhaps even more bizarre, this was one of just two games LSU played for the 1897-98 season; an outbreak of yellow fever postponed classes throughout the southern US and cut the football season short.
And as a further side note, earlier that season, Cincinnati beat Ohio State 24-0. The Bearcats have not beaten the Bucks since.
I remember reading about that. Old time college football is fascinating and there are plenty of treasures left undiscovered. Some of the photos in this thread are incredible.
I wonder if we could put together enough stuff to have a Bearcat museum. Could we find a leather helmet from one of those teams? Could we get Nippert's shoes?
That would be pretty cool. Are there any large schools that have sports museums? I have to believe there's a Notre Dame museum.

Penn State has a really cool sports museum attached to the stadium. They also have a creamery on campus. Get one of those and we have arrived!
We should be pitching our history like crazy to the B12. Seriously, a former football powerhouse... well in the 1890s. :) Talk about your sleeping giant.
