Nippert Stadium will be the home of a United Soccer League team
It looks like the new Nippert may be undergoing some additional modifications to accomodate soccer.

Official announcement -

CINCINNATI – FC Cincinnati, a new professional soccer franchise owned by Cincinnati businessman and philanthropist Carl Linder III, will begin play at Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati with the 2016 season.

Led by principal owner Lindner, the FC Cincinnati ownership also includes George Joseph (Joseph Automotive Group), Stephen L. Hightower (Hightower Petroleum Co.), and Jack Wyant (Blue Chip Venture). Longtime Cincinnati Bengals executive Jeff Berding will serve as President & General Manager, and former Procter & Gamble brand manager Gary De Jesus will be Sr. Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

FC Cincinnati will join the United Soccer League (USL) and play its season from March through September. John Harkes, a veteran of Major League Soccer and U.S. National Team, has been named head coach.

“It is with great excitement that we welcome FC Cincinnati to the USL,” said Alex Papadakis, CEO of USL. “We are equally excited and proud to welcome Carl Lindner III, a most distinguished resident of Cincinnati, to our league’s ownership. Mr. Lindner is known nationally for his vast business achievements, as well as his expertise in sports business as the former owner of the Cincinnati Reds.”

The Club will join the USL’s East Division as the league’s 26th club. Rivals in the USL will include: Harrisburg City Islanders, Louisville City FC, Pittsburgh, New York Red Bulls II, Riverhounds and Saint Louis FC, among others.

....

“We’re very excited for today’s announcement,” UC director of athletics Mike Bohn said. “It’s a spirit of partnership with Cincinnati’s best. It’s a terrific opportunity to feature what is great about Cincinnati and the known, trusted leadership of the Lindner family. To have people come to UC and see the great work being done here is a great opportunity.”

That's cool. Nice way to add some revenue too. Hartford is supposed to be announcing an NASL franchise soon and have already announced that a franchise in the Major Arena Soccer League, Hartford City FC will be starting up this fall at the XL Center.

Any dates in Univ facilities helps bring in some new $$$ to campus.

One of the benefits of artificial turf is the ability to have more events in the stadium without really damaging the field.

Orlando's new MLS team was recently in USL (maybe for 4 or 5 years).

USL averages 3,231 fans per game with Sacremento's team leading the league by far in average attendance per game (11,290) with Louisville's new team in 2nd in attendance (6,431) while playing at their Minor League Baseball Stadium.

Looks like ownership of this team will be paying to renovate locker rooms, a new scoreboard, and UC getting some of the revenue. Primary ownership is Carl Linder lll, graduate of UC, Billionaire. Have to think end game is MLS.

Edit, GM just said goal in MLS and mentioned Orlando.

Orlando is a different animal. There are no summer sports and there is a large percentage of foreign residents. I don't think soccer will take off in Cincy.

Actually there's lots of soccer fans in Cincy, great business move. If properly promoted it will take off like a rocket.

This is pretty exciting actually. Loads of soccer fans in this town. The ownership group of this new franchise is a powerhouse, these folks are loaded and are serious about making this successful. I have my doubts, only because of the fickle and sporadic nature of our sports fans in this town across all our teams. But i still have hopes that itll embed itself in this towns culture.

Plus the added cash flow and potential stadium, locker room, and scoreboard improvements i cant complain as a UC fan either.

There are some whiners. Mostly your stereotypical, cliched, old American soccer haters who just cant handle or fathom anything like this happening. Some of these geezers would rather burn Nippert down than allow a soccer team in despite the numerous benefits. Luckily its not up to them, and time will leave their archaic "I dont understand soccer therefore its dumb and not a sport" mentality in the dust.

Cinci isn't much different than Louisville, where their new USL team is #2 in attendance.

While MLS soccer isn't that great...USL is a big step below that but in some cities, it works, in others, it doesn't.

If Cinci averages 4,000-5,000 per game for 16-18 home games (believe all USL games are played on Weekends), I'm sure they will be pleased.

Nippert will provide great viewing angles (most avail seats very close to the field), plus, unlike Louisville and other teams that play in baseball stadiums), all/most seats will be sideline views.

RE: Nippert Stadium will be the home of a United Soccer League team
FYI, With help of many soccer specific stadiums (plus the top 3 taking advantage of large football/baseball stadiums), MLS Average attendance is 21,004

http://soccerstadiumdigest.com/mls-attendance-2015/

Believe Minneapolis has received a MLS invite and I don't think the league wants to dilute the talent even more so...so future spots might be rare...and maybe, better chance to steal a team from the bottom with a better/more valuable/more revenue stadium.

NOTE: One of if not the first soccer specific stadium opened in 1999 in Columbus, OH...a stadium now that looks like a glorified HS Football Stadium compared to some of the new $130 Million palaces that have recently opened or will next year like in Orlando...which normally have a lot more premium seating (means more $$).

MLS wants to have 28-30 teams eventually. Smart on Cincy's part to start down that path now.

If a university can have a revenue producing facility, then do it.
USF Sun Dome has events all of the time. Smart

I can't imagine Cincy will get a MLS team with Columbus just up the road. I think USL is probably their ceiling, perhaps affiliating with Columbus as their minor league team.
