The ownership group of this new franchise is a powerhouse, these folks are loaded and are serious about making this successful. I have my doubts, only because of the fickle and sporadic nature of our sports fans in this town across all our teams. But i still have hopes that itll embed itself in this towns culture.

Plus the added cash flow and potential stadium, locker room, and scoreboard improvements i cant complain as a UC fan either.

There are some whiners. Mostly your stereotypical, cliched, old American soccer haters who just cant handle or fathom anything like this happening. Some of these geezers would rather burn Nippert down than allow a soccer team in despite the numerous benefits. Luckily its not up to them, and time will leave their archaic "I dont understand soccer therefore its dumb and not a sport" mentality in the dust.

Dude...The USL is a third tier league even by our standards. Take your elitist soccer fan garbage somewhere else.

Nothing elitist here. Im more excited about how this benefits UC than the soccer part, though that part is pretty cool too. The ownership group has stated their ambitious intentions and thats got me pumped. Not a darn thing wrong with disliking soccer, though. Its not for everyone. It is ridiculous that folks have gotten so upset about all this simply because it IS soccer and seem to be ignoring the positives for the institution they love that will come from this partnership.

Elitist? I think you just proved his point.

i enjoy soccer, I just don't want Nippert to be the home of anybody but UC. And I sure don't want to see them literally take a few rows of seats out of Nippert to make it more soccer friendly. That is just lame. Letting them use Nippert is one thing, but letting them actually make alterations to accommodate them better is another. I can't believe we are doing this. Especially if removing the seats drops the magic number below 40k that we just got to and haven't even played a game there yet.

Are you saying you don't think "time will leave their archaic ...mentality in the dust" smacks of elitism?

Didn't Bohn pretty much already say that altering the stadium for soccer wasn't going to happen?

RE: Nippert Stadium will be the home of a United Soccer League team
Yeah, there are loads of soccer fans in this area but they sure don't care about MLS...much less a farm team. Every soccer fan I know watches the English Premier league etc. I don't know anyone hardly that has been to the Crew stadium, much less watch their games on TV.

It will be gone in 3-5 years.

It seems like the only sports that ever stick around are minor league baseball and hockey.

I am all for UC getting extra $$. I don't know what their cut is, but everything helps.

Bohn talked around it. I remember him indicating anything that is done to Nippert will enhance the fan experience.

Up the road 2 hours away...don't really need that much MLS support to fill 20,000-25,000 seat soccer stadiums.

Plus, having a nearby rivals (unusual for MLS) would provide fun atmospheres...like the recent NY vs NY game at Yankee Stadium.

Orlando and their fans are dying for the Miami franchise to come on board...as Orlando fans want nothing better than to take a nearby road trip for a game during the summer.

On soccer lines during football games.

Bohn gave an emphatic “no”. He advised that several professional teams such Metlife Stadium (New York Giants, New York Jets) and CenturyLink Field (Seattle Seahawks, Seattle Sounders) regularly accommodate multiple teams sharing the same playing surface with different colors and designs.

On adding grass to Nippert Stadium.

“I don’t think we’ll go that far. I don’t think we’re even ready to talk about that.” See above. Technology’s come far enough such that grounds crews can change the designs on field turf in a similar manner to grass surfaces. But field turf is always preferred to grass because it’s maintenance-free, so why would UC go with the inferior product?

On removing seats.

Bohn called that “speculation” and confirmed that even though it will be tight in the corners and along the edges, there’s enough width to accommodate a regular professional soccer game. So that’s about it.

On financial benefits of bringing a professional soccer team to Nippert.

Bohn praised the partnership with Carl Lindner and access to his billions (or is it merely hundreds of millions?) in net worth as a major boon for the athletic department. He specifically mentioned the new scoreboard and upgraded locker rooms as “enhancements” to the soccer stadium with this partnership. Now you know where that money came from.

On other benefits.

Bohn mentioned recruiting for soccer and football, both of which will benefit from the upgrades mentioned above. The soccer team specifically will probably reap the same benefits that the football program has for the last several years, an incredible stadium to show off to prospective players.

Do the UC Men's/Women's Soccer teams play at Nippert too in the fall or do they play elsewhere on-campus?
