Why is your mascot a buffalo by the way? Did buffalo/bison ever live in western WV? I'm not sure what their native range used to be before humans almost hunted them to extinction.

UTSA was in that logo contest year. If I remember correctly, we got knocked out in the Final 8 by NC State. We didn't post anything about it here though or try to enlist the help of anyone else. Can't say the same for NC State though as they enlisted the help of ECU in a vote-for-us and we'll-vote-for-you "keep Carolina schools alive" campaign.

But in short, Marshall baseball coach Carl "Duke" Ridgley referred to a late-1920s squad as a Thundering Herd... Referring to the noval and motion picture of the same name. Even though there aren't wild bison roaming West Virginia, the name eventually stuck.

I actually would like to know the name 49ers came to be in Charlotte. Was there a gold boom in 49? 04-cheers
