Most Winning Programs Over Last 50 Years
Found this chart online for the most successful programs over the past 50 years (this is from 2012 so a few years old). ***Note you must have been playing at the highest level the last 50 years to be included. Sorry UCF, Ga So, Boise etc..
Anyway I thought it was interesting for realignment concerns for who has a history of being good at football.

Most Winning Programs Over Last 50 Years
I think Virginia Tech in the top 20 was most surprising considering a 50 year span. I really don't remember them winning a bunch prior to the mid 90's? Well done Hokies!

VT is 16 in all time wins having dropped a spot to GT last year.
The ones that surprise me were GT, Syracuse and Pitt being so low as they are 15 17 and 19 in all time wins.

Too bad on-field performance isn't the main criterion for P-5 membership, otherwise BYU and Fresno State and Hawaii would be in the Pac-12 and Washington State and Oregon State and Cal would be in the MWC.

Check out #23. Southern Miss has been a consistently solid program -- the last three years notwithstanding -- and they haven't gotten a sniff of a call up. Market size and location has killed them and should be a lesson to those hoping to see Boise State in a P5 conference. USM was good for a whole lot longer with a much better schedule and neither the Big East nor the AAC thought them worthy of membership. Unless Boise merges with Idaho, I don't see them getting a serious look.

Why would that matter? The whole state of Idaho only has 1.5 million people.

50 years ago would include FCS since 50 years ago, there were no FCS or FBS. Boise State was at the highest level in D1 back in the 1960's and in the 1970's before 1978 when the 1A and 1 AA was formed. That means Big Sky, Southern, CAA, Southland, SWAC, MEAC and some others schools in FCS were at the highest level at the time.

Boise State is unique as it is. They overlapped borders where they are at. It is not just Idaho that is their tv market. Spokane's TV market covers Northern Idaho which means Boise State do have the Spokane market. It is like our local Fort Smith TV station. They cover both Arkansas Razorbacks and Oklahoma Sooners sports. They even cover The Cowpokes of Okie State. Boise's tv market also includes part of Washington, Oregon and Utah as well. I say about 2 million is the estimate for Boise State.

Dude you are an idiot. Becuase of the split in the 80s the teams that went to 1-AA are not eligble for this chart, also Boise was never FCS in the 70s maybe NAIA or Jucobut not D1.

No big surprises in top 8.
surprised that Florida is so high at #9. Many people think of Florida as a johny come lately, not joining the elite club until 1996.

50 years ago makes it 1965. There were no split at that time.

Boise State moved to Division II in 1970. They moved to Division I in 1978 with the rest of the Big Sky.

I was looking at Montana and Idaho that were part of the PAC 12 conference under another name as D1.

Regionally speaking I find interesting that ECU, UNC, and NC State are so close. Surprised about the MAC Schools.

Right, but that was more than 50 years ago and not within the parameters of the chart. It isn't taking wins away from anyone and the record book isn't changing, it's just a different way of categorizing winning percentage. If it were looking at the past 20 years, Boise State would be on top.

No, most of those schools were in Division II or NAIA then. They later moved up to Division I.

No surprises in top 16.
Remember, FSU, Miami and Florida have been pretty good for 30 of those 50 years and they were ok before then.

Miami and Toledo were very good for a long time. Toledo from 69-71 had one of the longest win strings of modern times, 30 or 31 games. Miami was ranked 3 times in the 70s, cracking the top 10.

I believe Miami is the only program in history to win three straight bowl games against SEC teams, all in the Tangerine Bowl.
