I believe it is scheduled to start tomorrow. Correct?
Any news stories or position battles we should be looking out for in particular?
Anyone know if practices are open and if so does anyone plan on attending?

Unless he blows people out of the water, he probably won't see the field this season. Too much of a log-jam at the position.
Storylines:
-Is Lemon anywhere to be seen?
-Who lines up as the first-team Linebackers & Safeties?
-What the O-Line 2-deep look like?
Also, for those of us that are twitter-inclined, it appears that Severson is much more active with the HW twitter account than Nitz was, so that's probably the best bet for information as it breaks.

I'm wondering if by 5 years he means the 5 years he's been here. Because looking back at the 2010 team, the depth chart there leaves any other team hard-pressed to beat it.

The Tears thing would drive me crazy if I was a coach. He might be the best receiver of the bunch. With the climate in college football right now, I'd be very tempted just to throw every piece of talent I had out there. Who knows where NIU will be in 2 years in terms of being competitive. If this is indeed the best team NIU will have over the next few years, you would hate to see that talent not see the field. One thing you don't want to have happen is to get hit with injuries and then burn his redshirt on a short season.

you don't know how good he is at this point, heck practice ahsn't even started. At the end of fall camp it will be determined. In 2 years we may even be better. In the coaches eyes the best will play period.

If he is the best player now, then he should play now. If he will be the best receiver next year or the year after, then redshirt him!

Hahahaha so let me get this straight MD is saying Tears, as an 18 year old true freshman, is better than Tommy Lee Lewis?
Okay, MD.
For the record, I'll be surprised if he redshirts.

RE: Training Camp
The biggest issue for Tears (or any true freshman skill player) is how fast he picks up the offense. Often, especially with truly mega-talented players, they're only asked to do a couple things over and over in a high school offense. Those couple of things often lead to touchdowns and everybody's happy.
Now, in college, he'll be asked to be part of passing concepts where he needs to recognize man or zone and know where to break off routes to most effectively take advantage of vertical and horizontal reads.
None of that is especially difficult, but it does take time to learn. If he was doing it at the high school level, then perhaps he can hit the ground running like Martel Moore or Perez Ashford. If it's all brand new to him, then it may take a little while before he can translate all of that skill and speed into effectiveness.
Then there are guys like Jimmie Ward, who kick ass starting the moment they stack their first boxes on the dorm room floor.

And....he will have to learn (and buy into blocking).

5 years ago an 18 year old Tommy Lee Lewis was one of our better receivers on the team. We are getting better quality guys on the roster than we did then.

No he wasn't. He barely played receiver at all that year. His biggest role was as a kickoff returner.
The top 6 on the depth chart were Moore, Na-Palm, Clark, Ashford, Da'ron, and Anthony Johnson. Hell, you can even say Grady was ahead of him on the depth chart at this point.

Tommy caught a grand total of 0 passes as a true freshman. Zero.

RE: Training Camp
Per Huskiewire, Carey says he's most interested in competition on the O-Line, secondary, RBs, and punter.
Based on 1981's information, the O-Line battle will likely be for right tackle between Howard & Scharping. Given the history of rotation, both will likely see playing time.
There's an open spot at Safety where Durante played last year. Competition will likely be between Mayes, Allen, Abresch, and Johnson.

RE: Training Camp
A couple other things:
He said, based on history, 3-5 true freshmen will play, so we can begin trying to guess those.
Also said they played it very conservatively with Hare early on last season.
