Look at what you've done dawgitall. You've pushed an ACC fan and in ECU fan into total agreement.
02-13-banana The vast majority of the middle aren't really idiots, they could just care less about politics.

And the b*itch and moan about sh*t. Which in my book makes them morons.

That train wreck is apparently the most watched cable news program of all time at 24 million.

RE: Open Thread - 8/6/15 GOP Presidential Debate
I really don't want to hear about what a candidate's dad did for a job, and certainly not repeatedly by the same candidate. I don't want to hear that every candidate is deeply religious - just so they can be elected since they feel they won't be elected otherwise. I sure as heck hope they aren't deciding whether to invade a country based on something they read in the bible or scriptures or whatever. I don't want to hear soundbites constantly about how the other party screwed up on everything and how horrible things are. I don't want the name-dropping of Reagan in there as if they have some connection with him. I did miss the first 10 minutes or so of the debate so I don't know what happened there.

I guess that's why I don't like debates. I don't have any issues with how Fox handled it, considering you have 10 freaking candidates to ask questions to.

The people in the test group seemed surprised by how Trump came off in the debate, in a negative way. From what I saw he seemed the same as he had acted previously. Not sure where the surprise came in.

Exactly what I thought.

I'm sure it was a setup by fox to make Trump look bad.

The first ten minutes were as you discribed.

Probably because if you are engaged enough to participate in a political event like that, you are probably like me in that I don't waste my time watching crap like "You're Fired", or whatever that crap show he was in was called, and I don't read People magazine. Therefore, I was shocked at how bombastic and thuggish he is. Which would be fine.... I'm all for a take-no-prisoners type of attitude, but that coupled with his less than convincing assertion of transformation from progressive to conservative gives me great pause and concern.

The middle does care about politics, but I think they care more at a local level than they do the national. Here in ST. Johns county I see more effort spent on local elections and to some extent statewide than I do the national ones. Just my view.

RE: Open Thread - 8/6/15 GOP Presidential Debate
My thoughts:

We are in the long exhibition stage of the nomination process, which is very fluid (as more than one commentator has pointed out, at this point in the 2012 cycle the candidates leading the polls were Cain and Bachmann). Up to now, it has all been about laying groundwork in early states and trying to get media attention. Trump has no problem getting media attention, but others have to work harder for it.

Last night the moderators went after Trump much harder than the other candidates, which he deserves given the way he has conducted his campaign. I think that what we saw with him is all we will ever see from him: a lot of generalities, bombast, and self-importance. No matter what else he said the whole evening, his refusal to promise to support the Republican nominee will cost him more support than anything else.

There are two major reasons why 3rd party runs occur. One is that the two major parties do not and cannot serve everyone or refuse to; that is why libertarians have their own party. The other is that some faction or candidate is not happy with the direction the party has taken (Teddy Roosevelt in 1912, the Dixiecrats in 1948, Wallace and populist conservative Dems in 1968, etc). As for independent candidate runs, these are actually quite a modern phenomenon. For most of our history, candidates who ran outside of the major parties joined or created a 3rd party organization; that began in 1980 when Anderson ran as an independent. Perot also did so later, then built a phony party organization to make it look like he represented something more than himself (he did not).

Trump won't win the Republican nomination. The last time either major party nominated a candidate with no political experience it was Wendell Wilkie in 1940, and that did not go very well. Trump might run as an independent candidate, but the real variable is his attention span. He has enough money to keep going as long as he wants, but my guess is that he is likely to get bored when he starts declining in the polls (after last night, as well as other events which will show him to be unserious and mostly self-promoting) and becomes just another candidate. But if he does choose to run as an independent, it will be much like Perot's 1992 & 1996 candidacies: a rich guy accustomed to getting his way trying to win the presidency without doing much more than repeating the same stock phrases and expecting everyone to be awed by his obvious greatness.

It will be very interesting to see what the polls do in the coming days and weeks. I think that there will be a sorting out of the candidates that will make the lineup for the next debate look somewhat different (I bet Fiorina will replace someone who was on the stage last night). Likewise, some who did not do so well will begin to really fade. This is what happens during the exhibition stage, but nothing is really settled until we get to Iowa and New Hampshire.

RE: Open Thread - 8/6/15 GOP Presidential Debate
Well now we will see if some of the candidates get completely shut out by the money bags. That will thin the herd a bit. Have a couple more debates, plus the various other slips and slides of the normal campaign season that will continue to leave some by the side of the road when the money stops flowing their way. So by January we should be down to what, four realistic candidates? Bush, the Ohio guy, Rubio, and Walker maybe?

Why did 24million watch the debate? Why did 6million watch the early debate?

Because a can of whoopass is about about to be opened, thats why.

I dont think Trump will win, but the person who does win will likely have the same attitude about doing whats right, and what the people want.

Out of the 17 candidates, about 6 or 7 are better than Romney and all but Graham are better than McCain. Excellent field.

I hope you are right. Just because I think it would be hilarious.
