RE: Baseball Equipment
I don't know enough about baseball to have an intelligent conversation about bats, cleats, gloves, etc. I never played.. I've watched a lot, but not enough to know what's good as far as equipment goes.
That being said, my sister played softball for years, and the rule of thumb was you got what you paid for. Now granted this was 15-20 years ago. What I would do is see if you can find a place to let you demo a few bats and see what feels good for him.

What do you guys think about this bat? My son really wants it for his birthday, but it's a little out of my price range. What do you guys think? Is it worth it? Are cheaper/better alternatives?
How old is your son?

RE: Baseball Equipment
I used to play when I was younger and always had the best bats. Let me tell you this is definitely not worth it. You should be able to get a good one for $150-200. He won't notice a difference
