Heinicke in camp
I read a running tweet last night on the "dailynorseman" web site. They were reporting on Vikings evening practice scrimmage. TH threw for 2 touchdowns and sounded good in limited reps. Of course Bridgewater and Hill get the majority of snaps, but it seemed like TH outplayed Kafka. Keep it up TH!!!

I have been reading mostly negative stuff on TH through the first 4 days of camp. The Vikings have 5 preseason games this year which will mean TH will get plenty of reps, especially in the first three games.

Here are a few that I saw:
Quote:Undrafted safety Anthony Harris also nabbed a pick off undrafted quarterback Taylor Heinicke.
http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/Noteb...ings072915
Quote:Yesterday, I mentioned that Taylor Heinicke had the most arm strength of the backups, and today’s camp really did not solidify that thinking. It could be the minor differences for a group full of weak arms, but Heinicke really did not let the ball fly out of his hands very quickly. I think there’s a pattern with him regarding his ball placement and velocity, which is that his accuracy increases the more he lets up on his throws. He’s not used to throwing with more velocity, so as he ramps it up and changes his release, his unfamiliarity hurts his ability to put the ball where it needs to go.

Quote:As for the backup quarterbacks, I thought Shaun Hill was clearly the best (and not just because he's... you know, supposed to be). He handled the wind on Day 4 the best out of all the quarterbacks and could do a better job connecting at all depths than Mike Kafka or Taylor Heinicke. Kafka had the ball die on him going deep against the wind, and couldn't seem to adjust to the breeze (which was not that strong, honestly). Heinicke had a better arm, but a worse day. He was not only inaccurate, he was clearly making the wrong decisions.

RE: Heinicke in camp
Nothing terribly critical here. First post also mentions pick offs against Bridgewater and Hill. Heinicke is a rookie. Most of what these people are saying is to be expected. Remember, he only has to beat out Kafka and I think so far he's doing that.

He's playing for a couple of things.
First is being the third string QB as you say. But he also is trying to be good enough to avoid the practice squad. But remember, there will be QB's let go as the preseason winds down. There might be a QB on the open market that the coaches like better than a rookie as third stringer.
That being said, TH had a good day today:
Quote:HEINICKE GETS A CHANCE: The coaches gave quarterback Shaun Hill a break today, and it was rookie Taylor Heinicke who got a look with the second-stringers. He has been streaky in camp so far, but he fared OK today. He threaded a touchdown pass to rookie tight end MyCole Pruitt and hit receiver Cordarrelle Patterson a couple of times on the sidelines. It looks like Heinicke has the leg up on Mike Kafka to be the No. 3 QB.

That's welcome and good news. I am really looking forward to watching TH in the Hall of Fame game Saturday.

RE: Heinicke in camp
He's still got a lot of work to do. Zimmer is a hard-@$$ and it sounds like TH struggled a bit with Turner's hard coaching as well. I wonder what happened that made Coach Z bring it up in the presser.
At any rate, I think TH's bread will be buttered when he gets in pre-season game rhythm (as long as they don't break his confidence by changing his entire throwing motion). That kid is really accurate when it counts and it's hard to believe that he is even that many levels below Bridgewater and Hill, IMO. If they decide to let him go, I will be looking for Chip Kelly to respond.

RE: Heinicke in camp
Here is the highlights video from the Sunday practice. TH looks pretty good with two TD throws working with the second team offense. Hopefully things are starting to look a little more up than the earlier reports and comments have indicated.

Not sure about that. .... look who started for them last year
Teddy Bridgewater (12) /Matt Cassel (3) / Christian Ponder (1)

Well, Ponder was kept because he knew the offense and the other 2 were new to the team. Cassel was brought in to start, so they could ease Bridgwater in. And Teddy was a rookie. Now that Teddy is in his second year and has proven capable, they probably don't need to carry 3 QBs.

He's a running qb with a slightly undersized frame, they'd be moronic not to keep 3 qb's.

Didn't Fran Tarkenton play for the Vikings?

They will keep 3 quarterbacks. Saying they won't is nonsense.

From what I have read, they will definitley keep three quarterbacks, but it is still uncertain whether the third QB will be on the active roster or on the practice squad. Some have opined that the Vikings might even keep three on the active roster and a fourth on the practice squad. They will have five preseason games to make this decision, and TH really needs to shine in those games.

FWIW, I was talking strictly about the active roster.
