the ACC is FSU's *****

so is the SEC too

FSU has a lot of *******

only Oklahoma has been a problem, and Miami of course

I wonder how many National Championships FSU would have had if there had been a playoff all along....

They owned quite a few years....2 early losses in '89 held them back....they beat Miami that year

'90, '91, '92, they were loaded

They would have won it in '97 for sure

FSU is not as strong a program as people think. people have short memories.

You'll see that play out this year.

Hilarious that NC school fans are talking crap. You guys should never talk outside of basketball season.

And this vegas person is a complete dolt. FSU isn't a strong program? Oh. Ok. We've only done more in the last 20 years (I won't even include the late 80s and early 90s in this discussion) than Clemson's done in their entirety. Clemson's a good program, and you're an [unintelligent person].

FSU is one of the few programs to claim a dynasty....'87-'00 was probably the most successful stretch of any school ever

it is not 87-00 anymore, 2000 was 15 years ago. Even back then, you didn't have that many titles.

FSU would have lost several games last year without Winston.

lol, I really don't know what your bitterness towards FSU is....

Clemson-FSU has turned into one of the ACC's premier games....I enjoy watching Clemson beat other teams (except for that LSU game a few years back)

Yea, people that see the big picture and ignore all the data from 1987 to last year and evaluate FSU just on this coming fall.

I don't think you understand the 'short memories' statement.

From 2000 on (the modern era), FSU hasn't been a dynasty. The football landascape is a lot different now than it was in the 90's. A lot of new programs, and a lot of other existing programs trying to be more competitive in football. Thusly the talent level is more diluted across the country and there is more parity. Your QB was one of the best all time college QBs. A lot of teams could have been in contention for a title and won one with Winston at QB. That is the most important position for a team to have a shot at all.

So ignore the Jimbo Fisher era because the old man Bowden era is more relevant? Is that what you're suggesting? FSU curb stomped arguably your best team since 1981, and breast another arguably best team since 1981 with a back up qb. Lol. Why do you think you're an appropriate person to say "FSU isn't a good program anymore"? Fool

So over the last 28 years, if you remove from 2010 on(with it's national title 3 ACC titles, Heisman Trophy winner, and 3 year record in the draft), AND the years from 87 to 2000.......FSU is just average.

OK....well, that seems like a reasonable way to evaluate it.

RE: Hello, Florida State - Goodbye Championships (article)
There's truth both directions.

1. Florida State was absolutely dominating when it came and is still far and away the biggest power in the conference which means huge recruiting advantages and better ability to get good coaches.

2. There is greatly increased parity in the sport and even the best programs need almost everything right in place to stay on top. It's not automatic anymore. Almost every major program has had periods (sometimes long ones) of being down and Florida State (while not as badly affected as some big programs) experienced this at the end of the Bowden era. On the flip side, with the right coaching, programs who are not as traditionally strong have been popping up in every conference to surprise everyone (Wisconsin was a lower level team till the 90s, Oregon was about the same, Michigan State, Stanford, TCU, etc have won their conferences outright in the past few years, etc).

3. Florida State is in much better positioned now than it was a few years ago, but it will likely never match the domination it had in the 90s. They'll win their championships, but they won't be the best team every year. If they maintain well coached, they'll win a pretty good chunk, but any slip-ups and they'll slide down for awhile (same as every other big program in the new reality of the sport).

Sure times change, but since when was the year 2000 referred to as the beginning of the modern era? Why not mark the first year of the BCS as the modern era?

I think of the modern era of college football as starting in the 80s. That was when you started seeing upstart Miami and Florida speed challenging some of the more traditional offensive schemes like Oklahoma's wishbone attack

By the 90s you had the pre-cursor of the BCS with the Bowl Alliance, and then the BCS finally broke the lock on the Rose Bowl and we had a championship game.

I think the 80s to the end of the BCS can be seen as an era....the evolution of speed in the game, the evolution of the post-season into a single championship game, and the evolution of the 12-team super conference with a conference championship game.

The new college football playoff is a whole new era now, and TV markets direct expansion....
