If any had played for an Owl head coach other than Bailiff, that would be one heck of a long pro career.

One did. Sendejo.

You are correct. Andrew was a freshman in 2006. David started at Rice in 2007.

Interestingly, the NFLPA says the average NFL career is -3.5 years. The NFL says its 6.5 years. Andrew will have passed both this year.

This will be his seventh year in the NFL, but really only his fourth getting meaningful minutes in the NFL. It took him a whoe to catch on.

He's mostly a special-teamer, right?

Mostly, although he was the starter for much of 2013 after their starting SS was injured, I believe. He's listed as second on the depth chart at SS/FS currently.

"Vance McDonald has a good day" (8/5)

Quote:It has been a quiet camp for McDonald, with Blake Bell getting a decent amount of buzz. It sounds like McDonald put together a solid session on Wednesday. Grant Cohn reported McDonald had three catches and no drops, and that he has had only one drop through the first five practices. That's kind of big for a guy who has struggled with drops in past camps. It is worth noting, he got off to a strong preseason start last year in game action but injuries ruined the season for him.

Also, here's a link to the last page of a long-running Vance McDonald thread on a 49er fan board: http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners...d/page192/

I freely admit I haven't read the whole thread, but did anyone catch Christian Covington on Hard Knocks on HBO? He was like "So far, training camp is a lot of me reading C.S. Lewis. I'm on like the third book. I like C.S. Lewis."

I'm pretty sure he's reading the Chronicles of Narnia. Oh, Rice, never change.

Gaines off to a strong start vs the Seahawks. Nice 3rd down pass breakup.

I have been away from the boards but had to write after seeing Gaines get some great air time. He's looking good.

RE: Owls in NFL Camps
The Skins just acquired a TE from San Francisco: Derek Carrier.

What does that have to do with Rice Owls? It probably means that McDonald is now solidly the #2 TE on the roster. Prior to this, I had seen some depth charts showing Carrier in the #2 position.

McDonald could end up being the starter before long if the Niners release Vernon Davis.

Did anyone watch the Texans game tonight? I saw James Casey and Jordan Taylor were targeted on several passes but neither caught anything. Were they catchable passes at all?

In the first half, Casey dropped an easy one, when coming out of the backfield. I watched the first half, with most of my attention on the Astros.

Late in the game on Denver"s winning drive, Jordan was targeted, but overthrown in the endzone. Andre Ware commented on Jordan's size and said "when did Rice start getting 6' 5", 215 lb receivers". He and Marc V. went on to praise Coach Bailiff and talk about what a great job he was doing at Rice. Andre said he was one of his favorite coaches at the college level.

Good pub is always appreciated.

And it's extra nice coming from a former rival.

Andre seems like a genuinely nice guy and good announcer. How many of you were at the final regular season game of his career at HRS where he TORCHED us for like 77 points on the way to his Heisman? Impressive performance to seal the vote in his favor!!

Was there with the MOB.

77 points was a later loss to Ohio State, which I was also at.

Present.

I agree that Andre seems like a genuinely good guy. I enjoy his color commentary. He obviously works at his craft.
