Lankford Grocery for Burgers is really good.. It's a former neighborhood grocery store that is a restaurant now. Only open for lunch.
Ninfa's on Navigation is my favorite for Mexican. They say they "invented" the fajita.
Gatlin's is good for barbecue. Another good place is Jackson St. BBQ downtown.
Sweet Paris in Rice Village is a good stop for dessert. They have great crepes.

RE: Southern Miss/ Rice Football Game
I'm not reading through 5 pages of post so I'm sure it's but addressed already... but Rice's campus sits right in the heart of upscale homes with beautiful tree lined streets.
Easily the riches area of any campus in CUSA ...two, three block area around campus. If we are talking a mile away from campus...FAU wins. It's a really dark area at night because all the trees over hang the streets on both sides but other than that ...
looks very safe
Check Expedia for rooms...if you don't mine waiting till close to game day you can get some great deals on room rates ...normal $175-$250 for $80 dollars a night. We stayed on the coast till game day then moved to Crowne Plaza Houston River Oaks about 1.5 miles away usually $180 a night we got it for $80
I know you said walking distant but I'm assuming you will have a car to get around in ...you will have ZERO problem with parking at the game ($5) or getting out. With a GPS Houston is easy to get around in so if it's your first trip...don't limit yourself to walking.
Rice Village is I would guess 1/2 mile from the stadium

I have stayed there several years ago. Cheated and went to see the braves in the airconditioning.
There is a papadeaux just south on Kirby very close to you. Very good cajun food.

Two very different worlds, for sure. Bud is one of the larger plants in the country. Very industrial. Saint Arnold is small and much better beer.

Can anyone give me a suggestion of a hotel close to the stadium in walking distance of bars. Also any good recommendations For food would be good. Everyone in the group loves buffalo wings so whoever has the best wings near Rice let me know.
I have been there and done that and from my point of view the Rice University location is as bad as it could be. We have a fine world renowned school, floating in money, recognized as one of the nations fines schools. They are, however, in an ultra urban area surrounded by a war zone one three sides and a fantastic medical center on the other. Most people go in there with health problems hoping the fantastic medical facilities can save or prolong their lives. Thus, you are confronted on one side by hapless and pitiful situations and on the other by purse snatchers and thugs. Best thing to do is find a room off the Garth Road or other Eastern exit off I-10, drive in for the game and then get the he$$ out as fast as you can.
What the hell are you talking about?? Rice has the medical center and Hermann Park on one side, and then affluent neighborhoods on all the other sides... Rice Village is one of the swankier neighborhoods in Houston..
i think he has us confused with the University of Houston.
No way to confuse Rice with UH. Especially after one of the Houston students opens their mouth.

Thinking about switching my reservation to the Best Western Plus in Downtown Houston. The address is 915 West Dallas Street. Doesn't anyone know anything about this location?

It's across from a good burger joint, called the Refinery Burger.

So I was just reading up on Rice U and I discovered that there are two bars on campus. Do you have to be a rice student or employee or are these bars open to the public? My friends and I were thinking of going to walk around campus on Friday and would like to Check them out.

Willy's Pub is the undergraduate bar. It can be pretty fun for undergrads on Thursday nights, but it's pretty dead at other times.
On the other hand, Valhalla is a Rice institution. It's bartenders are grad students/professors who volunteer and are paid solely by tips. The beer is super, super cheap and it definitely has a good vibe.. With homecoming next weekend, it will be active. I'd definitely check it out. It is right in the middle of campus so it pairs great with a campus walk.
In terms of campus attractions, I'd definitely check out the academic quad. It is extremely pretty with its Mediterranean architecture. Also, the 0, 45, 90 slabs in the engineering quad are kind of a landmark. Go to Valhalla and get a couple beers in you and try to climb the 45 The James Turrell Skyspace is another cool landmark. The Skyspace is pretty close to Tudor Fieldhouse (our basketball venue) and Reckling Park (our baseball venue). Unfortunately, both our men's and women's basketball team's open the season on the road, against Cal and Kentucky respectively.

Valhalla was the place to be at Happy Hour on Friday when I was a Rice grad student. It's under the steps at the Chemistry Building, and if the red light is on, it is open. I still go back as often as possible for a large helping of the good old days.
ExcitedOwl18 gave you great advice. Did he mention the piece of the Berlin Wall in front of the Baker Institute?
