The SEC is a better academic conference than the Big 12.

Boren prefers to be associated with Stanford's, UW Washington, Michigan, and Wisconsin's of the world.

Can't his school be associated with them through relationships that don't manifest on the playing fields? Sending his basketball or baseball team to play Stanford or Michigan has null impact on whether they would be associated academically.

By joining the BIG, his school would have the athletic association. All BIG members are also added to the CIC. That brings the academic prestige all university presidents want.

But they could still enter into academic relationships with those schools outside the auspices of the CIC, correct? Or have those relationships with the Pac-12's elite schools even while not being a part of the Pac-12?

Forcing money out of New Jersey for sports they don't' care about watching is going to be difficult as the TV model changes. Getting money out of KU/Nebraska fans is easy as they will gladly pay to watch no matter how the TV model changes.

Kansas from what I can tell hasn't said a thing.

Put your tinfoil hats on folks.

Kansas is the one closest to cutting a deal with the Big 10, OU is hoping to come along for the ride.

Why else would KU and OU be mentioned jointly but OU be the one making noise to indicate interest?

Kansas holds their own third-tier rights and in 2012 they made $6.5 million from third-tier rights. They have a media income stream to help them ride out the settlement of how much they should receive (if anything) out of the media rights retained by the Big XII under the GOR. Conservatively, they bring $7 million in TV value to Big 10 if they defect from the third tier rights plus the value of their road games.

Kansas is a member of the AAU.

I think Kansas is further down the discussion path (which does not equal Kansas being ready to leap) with the Big 10 than OU is, if OU is even in serious talks.

Kansas's T3 is with ESPN. OU's are with FOX.

I see no way Kansas moves to any other conferences with their football being so bad. They play like the FCS schools that they lose to. The expansions is about money in football. So, just like U. Conn., they move no where.

Simple Question. Kansas?
KU offers a lot but 3 things give me pause on buying that they move north right now.

1- GOR issues
2- KSU left behind
3- With NU already getting carraige rates for BTN in Kansas City they seem to add very little footprint to BTN with that market overlap.

Long term I can see it but short term each of these issues sticks out to me

4 - The top issue confronting the Big Ten in the short term is maximizing their next broadcast/cable TV deal(s). Those deals are about 80-85% football. Kansas football... well, you know.

Football's not the ONLY factor, especially with a network of your own. Basketball counts for a hell of a lot there, and Kansas basketball's a big deal.

If Oklahoma and Kansas want to make a jump alone, it would take about 2 seconds to get the deal done. (and then about 2 years to figure out the GoR thing).

Kansas is one of the few teams to play in and win a BCS bowl game. Finished the season with only 1 loss.

How many BCS games did Cal win?

RE: Simple Question. Kansas?
The B1G is a little soft in football for a P5 conference. The additions of Rutgers and Maryland only furthered that perception. Oklahoma would be a big shot in the arm for the B1G in football.

Kansas is SO weak in football I feel its a liability that outweighs their basketball program. All Kansas basketball will do for the B1G is push one of the traditional basketball powers of the B1G further down the pecking order.

For the B12, Oklahoma leaves for the B1G and Texas takes an ACC partial schedule that would make a lot of sense because neither schools belong in the starter P5 conference which is what the B12 is fast becoming. The B12 can backfil with BYU and Houston and still be credible at the P5 level.

Exactly as many as Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and every other school associated with your various screen names.

The B1G is already very, very good in basketball. Up their at the very top of the rankings with the Big East and ACC.

The new CFP system rewarding SOS is posing challenges for the B1G and IMO they could use some beefing up.

RE: Simple Question. Kansas?
You need to understand how expansion works in the B1G. They want money and they will allow a big brand revenue stream to enter the walls of the conference, BUT it needs to accompany a big academic/research/market move.

This conference cares more about dominating the federal research dollar aspect of academia and the economy more so than football. But they are not stupid and know they need big brand name schools to drive up TV revenue and to get the B1G brand to become national, they need to expand across the country.

The "no interest" Rutgers attracts more viewers more than your rabid following markets. For example, the RU-PSU game got a 2.2 rating in NYC, which doesn't sound like much even though it was the highest rated game in the NYC market that day.

To get as many actual viewers a game in the Kansas City market has to get better than a 15 rating, and a game in the most rabid cfb market (Birmingham AL) needs to do 22+.

Right now, the next two ACC schools that the BIG covets (UVa & UNC), do not appear to be willing to move. There are no other schools in the EAST that come close to the desirability of these two. That leaves expanding to the West. Mizzu was lost to the SEC and is probably untouchable at this point. KU and OU are the next two logical choices.

Probably not true. Virginia Tech is a top 15 engineering school, great academics, large alumni base and located in a key state for BTN expansion. All it lacks is AAU status, but it definitely has the research gravitas that the B1G is looking for. Look at its peer institutions on the VT website - VT academics at least thinks their peers are primarily B1G schools. In many ways, VT looks more like a B1G school than UVA, which thinks of itself as an eastern liberal arts college and Ivy League wanna-be.

That was why everyone kept thinking Big 10 was looking at someone other than Nebraska.

Kansas got $6.5 million for their third tier, and until LHN, made more off third tier than anyone in the Big XII.

UVa might be pretentious, but it's still a great research university. In the recent CWUR university ranking, for example, UVa is ahead of every Big Ten school except Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

Football drives what ESPN and Fox will pay but it isn't nearly as dominant with a conference network. The big games rarely appear on a conference network in football but conference networks can end up with a lot of significant basketball games.
