Could the AAC add Boise and BYU.....
if they could guarantee a spot in one of the New Year 6 Bowls. Would this conference be guaranteed a spot?
WEST
Boise State (Football Only)
BYU (Football Only)
Tulsa
Houston
SMU
Tulane
Navy (Football Only)

EAST
Connecticut
Temple
Cincinnati
East Carolina
UCF
South Florida
Memphis

The Fiesta, Cotton, and Peach Bowl are all open. Could the American come up with a deal that if the east division winner wins the Conference they go to the Peach Bowl (when not in playoffs) and the West Division Winner go to the Fiesta Bowl (when not in playoffs). ESPN owns the rights to BYU and the American plus the New Years 6 Bowl Games could they make this happen to create more eyes for their American and BYU content that they got cheap. In this deal BYU would still get there $6 million a year from ESPN but would just help them with scheduling in November and guarantee them an access bowl (just like Utah has).

Now the question what does the bowl games get out of it. That I do not know.

RE: Could the AAC add Boise and BYU.....
Short answer, no. Boise was a candidate awhile back but basically asked the AAC to whore their tv contract out so that Boise could sell its own home games, we said no the MWC said yes. BYU won't leave independence to join anything less than a P5. They make more $ on their own and joining the AAC would actually be a revenue loss.

My guess is the only way the AAC can ascend to power (or even tweener) status is if they pick off the remains of a Big 12 implosion.

RE: Could the AAC add Boise and BYU.....
Boise and San Diego St were already going to do this, joining the Big East or the AAC (not sure which it was, at the time) to make a nation-wide, power conference.

It was an effort to maintain the BCS auto-bid status of the Big East within the new CFP. It didn't work, and so both Boise and SDSU backed out and stayed in the MWC.

The 'best of the rest' ship already sailed. A football only conference would have had to have been created for it to work logistically.

I don't think they'd need to anyway. A conference with Boise, BYU, ECU, Cincy, UCF, USF, Houston, etc.. that doesn't win the bid for the Access Bowl has really s&*^ the bed.

Also, why would you put Memphis in the East and Navy in the West?

If I were an AAC fan, I'd hate the idea of adding more football only programs. What a mess.

BSU makes more money in the MW than the AAC would let them (ESPN TV bonus $$ and 50/50 access bowl winnings)

The answer is an emphatic yes. BYU and Boise would accept in a second if the conference you propose could guarantee a contract slot with a major NYD bowl. Good luck getting that guarantee from a major NYD bowl.

Everyone in the BigXII now will have a P4 home when the dust settles. There won't be left overs to pick from.

Boise State
Utah
TCU
Hawaii
All had access bowls.
Fresno State and UNR came close for MWC.

Cincinnati, UCF, U. Conn, Louisville, USF. got in as P6 conference.

Houston came close.

Marshall came close as well.

Northern Illinois got in.

MWC is the only conference that have the most schools in the conference that got the access bowl. Most of Boise State came from the WAC, and so was Hawaii's.

MWC has the teams that have been dominate with the access bowl with the future and former members. MWC>AAC. I do not see any Big 12 schools going to the AAC nor any MWC. the Big 12 if implode would rather go to the best conference which is MWC.

There has been only "1" Access Bowl in history. You're adding apples, oranges and grapes and calling them a bowl of cherries. It doesn't work that way but, by all means do continue to amuse us. 04-rock

COULD the AAC add Boise and BYU?
---Uh, yeah, I guess...

Wrong question. Try asking it this way:
WILL the AAC BE ABLE TO add Boise and BYU?
---Not a chance in hell.

Unless a Big 12 implosion results in the formal legal dissolution of the conference, it's more likely that whoever is left will rebuild by cherry-picking the AAC and MWC.

Exactly.

What we should be talking about is the MWC raiding the AAC for SMU once Houston and Cincinnati receive B12 invites.

I agree. The new Big 12 would no longer be considered a power conference or earn power conference TV money. But if the left-behinds played their cards right, it could emerge as the top G5 conference, crippling both the AAC and the MWC in the process.

This is actually the scenario that concerns me the most as an MWC fan. On the other hand if the Big 12 were to dissolve entirely, with all or nearly all of its current members finding new P5 homes, the MWC and other G5 conferences could benefit inasmuch as it would be easier to press for a G5 auto bid in an expanded 8-team playoff (since the power conferences would only need 4 auto bids instead of 5).
