Baylor now in favor of Big 12 expansion
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/...r-it.html/

Going public about it. They were against it just a few days ago.

This means that expansion is going to happen and I expect it to be UCF (large student body, beautiful campus, easy airport access) and BYU.

Cincy and Houston coming in the next group.

BYU may be a "candidate" but they won't be added. They are expanding east, not west.

The article linked in the OP doesn't even come close to matching up with the thread-title.

Adding UCF already gives them more money because of the Florida market and a CCG bring sin 20 to 30 million more dollars a years.

Baylor was not in favor of expansion at all just a few days ago. They have changed their tune.

Without a conference cable network how exactly does UCF give them more money because of the Florida market?

Exactly. Coach comments when asked anything off script rarely line up with what the president or even AD are thinking.

RE: Baylor now in favor of Big 12 expansion
The big 12 might want to stay ahead of the AAC, so expansion is a must just for survival if OU did leave. I think Colorado State might get a look since they are the most big 12 like university. Flying into Orlando is easy from anywhere in the country so UCF got to be hight in the pecking order. I like this setup

Big 14

West: OU, OK state, KU, K state, I State, Col State, BYU
East: Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, WVU, Cincy, UCF

Copy the SEC format of 6-1-1

Thus if OU ever did leave, they are ahead of the MWC and AAC in stature to bring in USF, Houston, SMU, etc.

Tough gig for Art Briles, being both the head coach and president of the university.

Yes, "Baylor" is not in favor of Big12 expansion, "Baylor's Head Coach In Favor of Big 12 Expansion if the money is the same".

The money is not automatically the same ... the media revenue is only half of the pie, and that is the only part that goes up automatically in line with an expansion to 12, so the question is how much the two teams added help grow the other half. If they don't, then Art Brile's comment amounts to being against expansion.

And the remarks of the Head Coach is not automatically the policy of the University.

He said "if the money stays the same" It doesn't.

Also, that is Briles postition....not necessarily Baylor.

In your "irrational exurbance" for expansion, you are getting a little carried away with your headline

The OU prez said the TV money gets bumped up with 12 teams so that does stay the same.

Yes, but the total revenue does not

A quote from the Head Coach saying the school should change athletic conferences is equivalent to a quote from a professor saying something like a new department should be created.

Who cares?

The president and the board of directors (or board of regents, or whatever it's called at the particular school) are the only ones who matter and are the ones who make the decisions.

Yes, but the total revenue does not

It might if the difference in non-TV revenue is mitigated by adding championship game money plus reduced shares of new members. Even if not, improved stability and expanded recruiting territory might be worth small temporary losses.

"It might" seems like putting a positive spin on an admission that it won't necessarily do so.

Indeed, if the coach knew in advance that it wouldn't, saying "I'd be in favor of expansion if the money turns out to be the same" could be a softly spoken way of saying "I'm against expansion in the current circumstances."

Quote: Even if not, improved stability and expanded recruiting territory might be worth small temporary losses.
But that's going beyond the view of the guy two steps below the guy that is actually involved in the decision making.

This argument would seem to line up with the President of OkU, who talks about "strategic" reasons to not be the smallest conference, and "strategic" reasons is quite reasonable cover for "it would water the conference payout down, but not by as much as some people think".

But there's nothing in the story to suggest that Baylor is on the same page with the President of Ok, in terms of thinking there is a direct disadvantage to being the single smallest P5 conference.
