Zero for ND, ten percent for Texas?

Seems like these rumors all happen in June, July and August , and all suddenly die in September. 07-coffee3

If it goes to a combined P4 and funded by ESPN and Fox network packages for the 4 conferences, Independent schools might not get a pass. ND has NBC contract. Never say Never. That's a Loooong time !

RE: What are the odds of both Texas and Notre Dame becoming all-sports ACC?
Both?

More or less 0%.

I can't think of a single reason for ND to join as a football member if there are CFP berths available to non-conference winners. And currently 4/4 slots are available to non-champs. Even in an 8-team CFP with auto-bids to conference champs, there would at at least 2 slots open. Not to mention it's an easier task to finish top 8 than top 4.

So even if Texas were a 50/50 proposition, 50%*0%=0%.

And Texas isn't anywhere near that high of a probability to join the ACC. The Pac 12, Big Ten and SEC are all better positioned conferences than the ACC. I would gladly give Texas an ND-type deal to help lure other Big 12 schools to the ACC. But that doesn't mean I think Texas is eager to join the ACC or that they care all that much about being a football independent.

For Notre Dame, 0% next four years, 60% next ten years.

Texas 5% ever. There's just too much that has to happen.

Other than a "conference champs only" playoff (which is extremely unlikely), I see nothing on a ten year horizon that will force ND at gunpoint (the only way it will ever happen) to join a football conference.

Obviously. You already said zero percent. Your position is clear.

This is my opinion, obviously, and even at that I've allowed a large likelihood that it doesn't happen.

But I think the path to the playoffs for an independent Notre Dame will get more difficult over the next decade, and at some point the playing field will become too uneven to continue to countenance, when combined with having nothing short of a national championship to play for.

We'll know more after we see more playoff selections. We'll see what happens if a 11-2 PAC champion Southern Cal team and a 10-2 Notre Dame team that beat Southern Cal are vying for a fourth playoff spot.

I believe I've seen quite a change over the last 30 years over the kind of sway Notre Dame holds over college football, and while I believe they will continue to be accommodated to an extent, I believe the days of all of college football kneeling at the throne of the Irish is over.

We'll see what future coaches Notre Dame is able to hire given the inability to pin division and conference championships on their resume.

I have a hard time looking at the eroding of Notre Dame's independence over the last 30 years, and saying, "and it stops...NOW. Phew, glad we were able to stop the car on the edge of this cliff with two wheels hanging off."

It's moved in one direction and one direction only for decades, and I think there is a good likelihood that those trends continue rather than reverse themselves.

I tend to agree with Lou... Notre Dame will join the ACC, not with a bang, but a whimper.

RE: What are the odds of both Texas and Notre Dame becoming all-sports ACC?
I think going to an eight-team playoff is not only sensible it is in evitable. It is very simple: champs of the five major conferences all go along with three wildcard berths.

That said, if they do it adapt that model, that ends any chance of Notre Dame joining the ACC. As such, I fully expect Swofford and anyone else from the ACC to support the current four team model.

Agree, the only way Notre Dame joins the ACC is if independents are not included in the playoff. 07-coffee3

Texas will be together with the ACC teams, but it won't be the ACC any more when that happens. ND will not be a part of said group.

Nole, I respect you as a poster but unless it is mandated that a conference champ is the only one who can make the playoffs, ND will stay as is.

ND has never played for division or conference championships, ever, in 128 years and can care less about them.

ND has made concessions sure, but now is at the point (like Israel) that it cannot and will not make any more. This far and no further.

Besides, it got everything it wanted from the ACC in 2012, no need for further changes.

In any event, I will root for the ACC, the Big Ten, etc.. and all cable deals to implode before I will endorse ND joining a football conference.

Take care.

If we got to megaconferences, you'll end up in whatever the B1G + Pac-12 + BC/Cuse/UCONN is called. It's an open question whether Pitt would end up there too or in the other megaconference. If they did, everybody ND wants to play is already there. With the death of OOC scheduling, ND wouldn't have a choice any more. Your fate is sealed, it is a matter of choosing which one you join. And you'd join the B1G/Pac-12 one, because with or without Pitt nearly everybody you want to play is there.

After this contract ends if the ACC says all in or all out we will join in full. No debate about that, we have already said that Big East won't happen (Swarbrick said it's great for Catholicism horrible for every thing else), no one else will give us this deal. Where will join? Sun Belt? AAC? Go indy in everything? nope. Very unlikely..

Now will the ACC do this?

The Big 12 would give ND the same deal maybe even with less required games. If there is a Big 12 in 2027.

Not likely to be there, even a skeleton Big 12 won't work because of bowl access and our Olympic sports.

I tend to agree - the ACC is more likely to PERSUADE than try to force.
