I really don't get these comments. He is paid VERY well, what would you expect him to be doing?

He is paid well. So was Marinatto and he's doing far better than he did. Everything fell apart under Marinatto's watch. You have to be a long time BE fan to understand.

Just cause Marinatto was incompetent or did a bad job, doesn't prop up Aresco. If I was making $1.5mm I would do radio spots as well. I just don;t like awarding people for doing their job.

A new deal will help, but not a whole lot. Lets say we double to 4 mil per school. still won't keep anyone home.

RE: Mike Aresco on Sports56
People here hoping for 4mil per school per year when the B1G is looking at 40mil per school per year. Pathetic.

The schools in this conference can challenge most of the B1G on a daily basis. The B1G has only a handful of truly good teams and only a couple year in and year out, yet many would be happy with 5mil per year per school. What a joke.

If the Big 12 gets their waver, there would be true stability for the AAC. Do you honestly think ESPN would want the AAC to be stable when it comes time for contract negotiations? Hell no. The only way they keep the price down on the AAC is by having instability.

Bottom line; If there isn't movement by the time the AAC goes to market, there soon will be. 07-coffee3

I'm sure he supports that because it'll save the AAC from losing 2 members.

Or prevents us from being forced to add 2 teams we don't really want if we do lose a pair. That's the same thing as getting about a million dollar raise per team.

Interesting point. ESPN makes money off of Texas but not the B12, they would probably prefer the B12 falls apart and UT goes to an ESPN affiliated conference.

"Put your head down and focus on building the American" Amen bro! Oh, if only we could get everyone on board with this mentality... Usual disclaimer that yeah, I'd take the invite, blah blah blah... But I really believe this is going to be a great conference, obviously even better if no one leaves. I'd like to see just how good the American can get. Our next TV deal will speak volumes. Now if we can get that playoff expanded to 8... we may be okay.

That is about all we can ask for at this time. So when the next shake up happens and it will, the AAC will simply reload with the best of the rest. The same thing the B12 will do when it gets picked apart.
Half our teams may be in the B12 by 2017.

The question we need to ask ourselves: Is a picked apart B12 a better option than staying put in the American and growing the brand? If The B12 loses certain teams their next TV deal will drop down closer to where the American should be eventually anyway so it may end up being a wash and arguably smarter to stay in the American.
Hell, we might be able to get WVU back in the fold. Personally I would love to see the American flourish and work out. My general sense is given the obvious instability of the B12, I say we all stay put :coffee3:in the American. If the SEC, ACC, B10, or PAC come calling then that makes 100% sense to leave.

Guess we shall see. So what does your crystal ball tell you?

Depends on where you are. For teams like Houston and SMU, sitting in a division that looks like a CUSA roll call, a depleted Big-12 is far preferable. For a team with a location like ECU's, where the ex-Big East leftovers makes up much of your division, just adding W Virginia to your existing division probably sounds more attractive. I don't think its going to matter much. Unless the Big-12 is gutted down to less than 1 or 2 teams, it will still just reload from the next conference below in the pecking order. That's the way it always works. The only way for the AAC to actually build something is for realignment to stop for a good decade or so. If we had a decade or so where we had no poaching, I do think we could turn into a pretty impressive league.

ESPN does not need to do nothing for another 5 years. The can do or not do anything when and if there is a look in.

No one is going to be happy with 4 or 5 mil, but ESPN has 0 reasons to bump us big time before the end of the TV deal, [esp when they are in big time cutting cost mode] and unless another bidder is hot to trot to get us, there still wont be a huge jump. Reality sucks, but it is what it is.

This makes no sense at all... If the Big 12 adds teams from the AAC, their TV contract has wording says quoted by UO Pres

"The contract says that our main television contract … if we grow from 10 to 11 or 11 to 12, their payments to us grow proportionally,” Boren said. “So everybody’s share stays the same. If it’s ‘X’ dollars, it stays ‘X’ dollars."

So by adding 2 teams to the big 12 that would cost ESPN, let's say $15M per team because fox pays on that contract as well.

So $30M per team per year.

If ESPN doubled the AAC contract it would still only cost them around $20M a year.

You need to read before posting. My post had nothing to do with Big 12 expansion other then the fact that if they do not, the AAC becomes stable.

Why would ESPN want to pay more for teams it already owns? If the AAC is stable then they are in line for a HUGE raise and that would cost ESPN far more over the life of the contract then paying for just two schools to increase in value.

Please read my post again.

Realistically, I think this TV deal is with us for at least 2-3 more years. This season will mark our 3rd year under our current deal---close to halfway. He's been trying to redo the deal for the last 2 years. My guess is we are largely stuck with this deal in its present form and if there is any early relief---it probably won't come until its final year or two. That leaves us this season, plus probably 2 more under this deal.

Not true, they would re-negotiate in order to extend the contract. If they waited inflation, the rising cost of sports media, improvement of the conf members performance and/or the rise of other networks make cost them more in the long run. In you scenario no one would ever renegotiate a profitable contract ever.

They do it all the time. Syracuse and Pitt? Rutgers? TCU? Louisville? Besides, when Fox/ESPN included that clause in the Big-12 contract, they were probably hoping it would be a pair of ACC teams.

This is the beginning of year 2. 1st year of AAC was the old BE deal. Most likely have this season and next before ESPN even considers look in.

You are wrong. If the Big 12 doesn't expand, the AAC is going to market at the end of their current contract unless ESPN agrees to a huge pay raise. Why is this so, because the B1G, CUAS, MWC and MAAC's deals would be done, there are years remaining on the SEC and AAC's contracts. This leaves only the AAC open and on the market at that time. Fox is looking for eastern partners again to help FS1. The AAC is a strong possibility for that. ESPN would have to pay to keep it or lose it out right.

It's all in the timing. CBS and Fox lowballed the AAC last time because of instability. That issue will be removed from the equation. 05-stirthepot

That is exactly my point...screw my Big 12 scenario. It is actually better for ESPN if no teams go anywhere from the AAC. They remain depressed in value and even if they double the value in the next contract they still save money compared to two teams leaving for ACC, Big 12, etc...

If Texas or Oklahoma leave it is a different game then...The Big 12 is done.

to the people that make no sense in the thread

1) paying someone well does not mean they can turn water to wine

2) dear tulane fan, aresco lobbyied for you and without him you wouldnt be here..of all the fans you have zero room to complain about him as you add nothing financially or perception wise to the league, are sorta dead weight and you are only here because aresco spoke well of you

3) the logic that some of you are using that espn would lobbying for expansion in our negotiation makes no sense.....you realize what espn pays per team is way more than they pay for our entire league....the money theyd save from the instability of our conference will be less than what they end up paying for them in the big 12

As always I'll agree to disagree with you. Unless you find yourself sitting at the bargaining table for either the AAC or ESPN and have something factual to add in which time I'd be interested. As of now, not really since all we're currently armed with is our opinion. 07-coffee3
