College Basketball Countdown
down to #110- and still no Big East

Miss St #113- #10 in the SEC
Minnesota #117- #11 in the Big Ten
USC #124- #10 in the Pac 12
Clemson- #129- #13 in the ACC
Kansas St- #134- #9 in the Big 12

So of the remaining 109 teams- we know that 48 are from the P5. Another 21 are teams from the other 21 leagues(6 conference champs already posted) So that leaves 40 teams left. Still nothing from Big East, A10, AAC, MWC. Have got to think we're going to start seeing some of those pretty soon.

(I had been wrong about the MVC- they have Loyola (Il) projected as #130, #6 in the MVC.)

Kind of nice to think 110 days until basketball games start- and really only what about 9 weeks until practice starts(isn't that about 6 weeks before the season?)

Amazing that we're down to 95 and still no Big East teams. And it's not a bad thing- the numbers seem to indicate a whopping 9 Big East teams are left.

RE: College Basketball Countdown
was kind of curious. last year they had St Johns in at #98 and #8. So they are seeing the conference much better this year than they did last year. Creighton was next at #85 and 7th.

RE: College Basketball Countdown
yeah. The key though is going to be how we perform come March. Can't have another year where we absolutely crap out in the tourney.

RE: College Basketball Countdown
The March success will come. The league will, on average, probably get about 5 schools in the tournament on a year-to-year basis. Year one, we got in 4 schools (Villanova, Creighton, Xavier, Providence). Year two, we got in 6 schools (Villanova, Georgetown, Butler, Providence, St. Johns, and Xavier).

The more teams you get in, the more chances you have of a team(s) going far. Last year was disappointing, no doubt, but if I was told that we would get six teams in the dance, I would be ecstatic - based on the potential of a lot of the schools' ability to go far in the tournament.

I'm not sure I would say we're going to average 5 schools per year. With the double round robin, teams finishing in 5th/6th are always going to be very precarious. They are going to best case have 8 losses(which would be fine)- but most of the time they're going to have 9 and some years 10 losses. I think years like year 1 will be commonplace as well- only exception that Xavier and PC no where near as precarious.

Using year one as a commonplace wouldn't be very accurate, since three of the strongest Big East teams (Marquette, St. Johns, Georgetown) did not make the tournament (due to extremely off seasons). Teams like Villanova, Georgetown, St. Johns (even though they are currently rebuilding), Marquette and Xavier expect to make tournament consistently year-to-year. Others like Providence, Creighton and Butler should be competitive each year, with a chance to get into the tournament. DePaul and Seton Hall have struggled mightily for a while now, and would be ecstatic just to reach the NIT.

For what it's worth, Xavier, Butler and Creighton have all earned their place in the conference and then some. They have brought terrific basketball, loyal fan bases and exciting conference play moments. Glad they are on board.

I meant with the final standings. I think if you have 2 top teams like 2 years ago, and a 3 way tie at 10-8 for 3rd- it's very precarious for getting all 3 teams in. All 3 have got to have the chops themselves to get in the tourney. St John's didn't in 2013-14 and that's why they didn't get in.

RE: College Basketball Countdown
Also, I would say that we're going to have some years where there's so much depth at the 6-10 range where 4th and 5th place teams finish at 9-9. If you finish at 9-9, you have got to be very good OOC to have a chance to make the tourney even. Take this year. If Marquette finishes 9-9 in conference play, with their poor OOC schedule, unless they get 2 wins out of LSU/Arizona St/NC State, Wisconsin, and Iowa(and don't have any bad losses in the other ooc games)- it's going to be really tough to make the tourney.

well down to 91 and still no big east teams...

what's interesting now is they've shown 12 NCAA teams, so add 56 more and the 32 NIT teams- and you have 88. So next 2 are the last 2 out of the NIT, and then you get into the NIT selections. So looks like they think 9 for NCAA/NIT... (although with the Conference Champs losing in the conference tourneys you only have really about 24 real NIT teams.

have a feeling we have got to see at least 1-2 here in the next week. I mean, I can't imagine Seton Hall being much better than 85- and same with St John's. Even Creighton I wouldn't be shocked to see them here pretty soon.

RE: College Basketball Countdown
well the final variables came out....
New Mexico St #88 and WAC champion
Houston #87 and AAC #7.

With that, we now know mathematically that there are 8 Big East teams on the final list.

Right now we have
14 teams in the NCAA tourney

so we have left 54 more NCAA teams, and 32 NIT teams.

end of the day, if we have 8 top 86 teams, that's a pretty darn good season. I think 1 thing to remember as well- some of the 16 seeds are ranked lower than 144- but just for how they do it they rank them the lowest.

up to #81 and still no Big East teams. We're at a place now where there are 53 NCAA spots left and 27 NIT spots left. Get past the next 3-4 NIT teams they have- and those teams are solidly projected in the NIT.

So which 2 BE teams will not make it to the list?

I'd guess based on when it was done- DePaul and St John's.

St John's in at #77.

I'd guess now Seton Hall would be the other team out along with DePaul. Can't say I'd blame them.

Guys...I hope you can grow this board back. I know the back story but really this is the best place for nBE fans to congregate with your relatives close by (ACC and AAC teams). Good Luck going forward glad we are playing SJU/GTown and Nova. I'd like to see us play other teams occasionally like Providence, Seton Hall and Marquette.

04-bow

Thanks for the well wishes. The 2005-2013 version of the Big East was truly something special. The resulting fallout was unfortunate, but in the best interests of all the schools moving forward. Hope to see another game against Syracuse (and Notre Dame, Louisville, Pittsburgh, West Virginia) in the future.

Looking forward to seeing Cuse against SJ/GT/Nova. Those matchups will bring back memories.
