Purpose of this entire board anymore.
Fortunately, in our case...it is.
I look at at like this --- with ECU's pecker smaller than ours -- folks can't really use us as "that" example. One of the benefits of the AAC is that ECU is 'that guy.'

LOL. Nah, I think that Memphis is still safely that guy. This ranking has Houston and USF ahead of UConn, Temple and Tulane.
Hell every other year ECU is ranked ahead of Houston and only a few spots behind UCF and USF as a Tier 1 school in the USNWR rankings. So I am doubting that this ranking is really that accurate.

LOL at the notion of ECU being anywhere close to Houston academically. I am okay with ECU fans drinking the kool aid but damn this is foolish

All hail the academically elite! Hope it worked out for you...
Rankings are like ********, everybody has one. If you think all the schools in the American Conference are not reasonably grouped academically then you are drinking your own koolaide. Each AAC school has its strong points academically speaking. None of us should be beating our chest unless we are Ivy League.
I for one am very proud of my East Carolina Degree and have done very well with it. Peace!

I *think* you realize this discussion is not serious.
Besides, if this is a "dick size" competition, then it's a competition where the best is closest to average.
I will say this: With a USNews ranking of #129, UC isn't exactly Harvard. It's not like you hear people chanting, "We're #129! We're #129!"
But this is 35 spots higher than it was five years ago, and I'll take it. It appears that UC should rise again in the future.
#129 isn't golden, but it puts UC even with Kentucky, LSU, Oregon State, Arizona State, and just ahead of Kansas State, Oklahoma State, and a decent space ahead of West Virginia, Texas Tech, and Louisville. In short, UC is ranked high enough that it's even with other schools whose academic credentials are never questioned as P5 worthy.

Wow. That's got to be about the most self-effacing thing I've ever seen from a UC poster.

Well at least when someone says ECU has the "conference's smallest endowment" they can cover BOTH money and academics.

USNWR is the standard - and yes it is somewhat reputational, but also it weights the stuff that matters - student quality being a big factor. Here is a question for you - how much higher do you think the average Tulane standardized score (25-75 percentile) is when compared to UH's 25th to 75th percentile? I would guess it might be 250 pts higher. Tulane is waaaay harder to get into than UH and their student quality is on a different planet.
All good schools having different missions, but lets not pretend an average university winning some political dolled out money changes the academic realities.
Say what? " USNWR is the standard " for who? ARWU is the standard for the entire world period, you have other countries education ministry people, beating a path to Shanghai to see how they can raise their Universities standards in accordance with the ARWU standards, ARWU is the gold standard as far as the rest of the world is concerned, period. It's based on hard empirical evidence. USNWR is based on peer review and a lot of fluff. It seems B1G must use them or at least look at it, based on who they take as members for the B1G, anecdotal speculation on my part, but there is a strong correlation between the top USA universities on that list and B1G and AAU membership, the AAU long existed before the ARWU, I know. If want to be considered AAU material one day your University needs to be at the top of that list.

That's how I feel about my Memphis degrees. Though I was only an average student in engineering (an "overachiever"), I spent the first 12 years of my career with an international company working alongside associates having degrees from prestigious schools all over the country, including Stanford, Rice, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. A few of them were superior to me (the PHD candidate from Rice was genius), but I think it was more due to their ability than which school they attended. In most cases, I competed reasonably well and held my own in performance and compensation. My only regret was that I was not able to retain more of what was taught to me in school.
