Your program's best ever season?
Just a fun topic to discuss. What would you say is your greatest season ever? For programs such as FSU, Miami, Clemson and Virginia Tech this may be a bit harder seeing as you guys have had so much success in your history.

For Louisville I would go with our 1990 Fiesta Bowl team. Cards went 10-1-1 that season with a 34-7 Fiesta Bowl victory over Alabama. It was the game that really put the program on the map with Coach Schnellenberger.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
No, it's not really all that hard for VT - 1999 was the best season because that's the year the Hokies played for the national championship.
I'd say by that same logic Clemson is pretty easy, too - 1981.
For Syracuse - 1959

If you limit it to the modern era (after 1965 at least), you can probably narrow down the choices for a lot more teams...

For example, since 1965:
Pitt went 12-0 and won the national championship in 1976
For BC, I'd think 2007 has to rank pretty high up there.
Wake Forest won the ACC in 2006.
In 1997, UNC went 11-1 under Mack Brown
For Duke, 2013 is probably their best season since 1965.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
I guess it'd have to be 2013 with 1999 second. Both were undefeated National Champs, but 2013 flat-out smoked teams, had the Heisman, Rimington and Groza winners along with a Mackey (TE) and Thorpe (DB) finalist. And to top it off ended the SEC's streak by beating an SEC team in a manner that everbody said was impossible. Every starter but one on offense was drafted. Every starter but three on defense have been drafted (two are still at FSU, and will almost assuredly be drafted). The undrafted defensive player started as a rookie last year in the NFL.

That 1999 team had Peter Warrick, though. And dadgum that guy was goooood. Ain't that right, Hokies?

1999 FSU went Wire to Wire....they were stacked and loaded...Chris Weinke, Peter Warrick, even had Sebastian Janikowski

2013 FSU was great, but you could tell early on in that NC game that they hadn't seen the speed and power of a top notch SEC school.....it took them all game to adjust to it and finally win

RE: Your program's best ever season?
For LSU, I'd say 2003....that team was loaded more than people realized. Funny too, because at the time, the media was in love with USC...no one knew anything about Saban. Who were the coordinators for that '03 team? Jimbo Fisher (OC) and Will Muschamp (DC)

2011 should have been it....that was the best regular season by any team ever

Yes, Peter Warrick almost single-handedly beat Virginia Tech that night (the Hokies D had everyone else pretty well handled, but not him)

Im going to go with 1987 for Syracuse. That year SU went 11-0-1. They tied Auburn in the Sugar Bowl. If Auburns coach wasn't so yella, and went for the TD instead of the field goal to tie, SU likely would have shared the national championship with Miami that season.

That was a great season & arguably the Cards most talented teams but 2006 was the closest that we've been to a national title. Just a field goal away from beating Rutgers to go undefeated & taking on Ohio State for the title. Only if Bush didn't break his leg against UK! Adding to the misery Kragthorp came in the following season.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
UVa's 1989 season they went 10-3 with the only losses away to #2 Notre Dame and #15 Clemson and then their bowl loss to #11 Illinois. That team was co-champs of the ACC that year with Duke but beat Duke head to head 49-28 by scoring touchdowns on seven straight possessions.
But the next season 1990 was probably the most talented team despite ending up with 4 losses. UVa was ranked number 1 for four weeks before being upset on a last second field goal by the eventual national champion GT. Then a broken thumb to its QB led to losses near the end of the season including a 1 point loss in the Sugar Bowl.
Having said that, my favorite season was 1995 when UVa played one of the toughest schedules. They lost by one point at the last second in away games at Michigan and Texas (both top 15 ranked teams), and lost to #20 VaTech (all these were out of conference games). But then the Cavs beat #2 FSU (the first ACC team to beat them since they joined the conference) and UVa ended up as co-champs of the ACC that year and beat Georgia in a bowl game to finish 9-4.

1952. They blew out nearly everyone on the schedule, went undefeated, and were National Champions.

More recently? 1990. Also National Champions.

Perhaps, but going into the bowl season they still had OU, Miami, and FSU ahead of us. So an outright win most likely gets us the #2 ranking at best and #3 at worse.

Cheers,
Neil

But Oklahoma lost in the bowl I believe and FSU had one loss to Miami earlier in the season.

For Wake, as Mark has already noted, it is pretty easy. 2006. ACC Championship. 30-0 win at FSU. Victories over all 3 in-state conference opponents. Undefeated on the road until Louisville spanked us in the OB.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
1927 - 9-1, beat Clemson, Florida, UNC, Duke, Michigan State - lost a game by a touchdown of so to Furman.
1957 - 7-2-1 beat Clemson, MD, Florida State, Md, Tied Duke and Miami, lost 7-6 to William and Mary - was screwed out of the Orange Bowl by a probation levied by Kentucky against out basketball team (long story)
1967 - 9-2 lost heartbreakers to Penn State 8-13 and Clemson 6-14 in the remints of a hurricane.
2002 - 11-3 started 8-0 then lost three consecutive games to GT, MD, and UVa by 7, 3 and 5 points. Beat ND in Gator Bowl.

NC State has had four legitimate chances to go undefeated in the last 90 years. On the day we lost at Penn State in 67, we were ranked 3 and 1 and 2 had lost earlier in the day. In 2002, NC State became tight and ultra conservative on offense against GT, and we choked that, the MD and UVa games had some controversy but it didn't matter after we lost to GT.

Hard to say which was best. Phillip Rivers is hands down the best QB, but the 1967 white shoes defense and the defense that included one or two number one draft picks that came on in 2004 was the best defense.

Had Rivers redshirted, NC State probably runs the table in 2004 as only FSU and Ohio State would have had the parts to stay close.

That's why it takes 22-30 to play the game. One man is not enough.

What really amazing is that UNC has never matched a top QB with their running game or defense. If they had Rivers, Wilson, Gabriel, Kramer, etc., etc., they would probably have major bowl appearances in the 60's, 80's, and the 00's.

When Lawrence Taylor was at UNC, the UNC QB stunk. Mack Brown's two really great teams didn't have a memorable QB.

The real UNC question is this, was Bill Dooley better than Mack Brown?

Duke is tough to call.

The two Rose Bowl seasons in 38 and 41 were pretty damn good.
The 1944 year when they lost just one game and beat Bama in the Orange Bowl
The 1960 year when they won the Cotton Bowl.

I continue to be amazed how folks forget how much Duke dominated the Southern Confernece/ACC from 1930 to 1962 when they deemphasized football.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
Rule changes really make pre-WWII and post-WWII two different games.

More rule changes, plus the rise of polls in the 60's really changed things again. That's why I thought 1965 was a good dividing line.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
Back in the 30's, 40's and 50's, Duke and UNC were money games for NC State. They were usually played in Durham or Chapel Hill because they had legitimate stadiums and we did not have a legitimate stadium until 1966. NC State didn't even have scholarship players until the late 1930's. That said, the Duke record over three decades is quite impressive.

They played the SEC's show team (GT), they played Pitt, and they played Tennessee, and Navy during Navy's height.

They bested GT and Tennessee with 13-9-1, and 9-7-2 records over the term. The dominated Kentucky 3-0. They split with Auburn 2-2. They handed single losses to Bama, and Florida. They were bested by Pitt 5-7 and the Navy 4-6-4 (playing Navy in the 40's was like playing at GT in 1918 when they have the pick of all the best southern boys who had been drafted. The split with Ohio State and Oklahoma. Michigan and USC had Duke's number as they were 0-4 against them. A lost to Oregon State cost t hem the 1942 Rose Bowl. Along the way they beat Illinois, Baylor, Arkansas, Notre Dame, California and lost once to UCLA and LSU.

Duke dominated the Southern Conference and early ACC from 1930 to 1962 in the same way that FSU dominated the ACC from 1992 to 2003, and has again since 2012. What's also forgotten is that Duke basketball was consistently the second best in that period to NC State and UNC, depending on who of those two were on top.

What rules changes really changed things?

Duke deemphasized football in 1962 because they did not want to recruit black students that could not make it through school. Eddie Cameron got 5 votes for the plan with SC and Clemson the only two to really go on record against the plan. MD knew it had an advantage because of the State of MD's education system. Duke expected to keep an advantage because they could recruit the entire eastern US.

Race in the early 1960's is the electrified third rail that no one wants to talk about. MD admitted the first black athletes followed by NC State. There was a period of time at Duke where they tried to be white and elite until the student body and the faculty revolted and that's tied in to the recruitment of Adolph Rupp as basketball coach and the eventual settling on Bucky Waters. That's why Duke athletics disappeared between 1969 and 1977.

Now, in the very early 1970's I've sat in Kenan, Wallace Wade, Carter Finely, and Bryce and watched football while State played UNC, Duke, and SC among others at home.

The racial epithets were legion, pro and con. At Kenan I heard drunk doctors and dentists, hollering "stop that Nigg.." when Ted Brown had the ball. At NC State I heard an old NC State lady shout "Run, Nigg.., Run as Ted Brown had a break away and she nearly peed on herself.

Duke was at the tip of this racial issue in the ACC, and I don't think rules changes related to platooning or moving the goals, or things like that had a real effect on what happened in the ACC.

RE: Your program's best ever season?
My ultimate point is that by eschewing the records from 1933 to 1953, the ACC really sells itself short. The P12 took their old PCAA records after they collapsed and reformed in the late 50's and 60's. The ACC should do the same, that way history is not lost and people don't have the impression that the ACC formed out of whole cloth in 1953.

The BIGGEST change was outside of the NCAA - desegregation.
The biggest rule change by the NCAA (IMO) - unlimited substitution.
