there is no valid reason the government should be a profit center when it comes to student loans....

lends to investing in infrastructure....in this case, it's the people and their future

Gov't has to make money to pay off debt.

Government shouldn't be in the loan business at all. That's what banks are for.

That would bring us back to the day when only people qualified to pay the money back would be issued loans, which isn't politically correct.

Yes because God forbid we should let poor people go to college.

Folks whose parents pay for their college don't need loans, so they aren't poor. By definition every loan needing student is poor, so your point is moot.

Now needing a loan to maintain a certain lifestyle while in college is another issue...

Stahp.

Poor folks, and even more so, minorities, qualify for all types of subsidies and grants almost regardless of performance in high school.

How many people can actually afford that?

Nothing wrong with poor people getting loans and going to college. In fact, that's the American dream. But they're scum if they don't pay the loans back.

I paid mine back with interest but I also understand that circumstances sometimes make it difficult to pay it back.

Well. It obviously depends on the school and how well the parents planned. I have 2 siblings. All of us went to college. My parents had saved for all of us to go to college, so none of us had to use a student loan. Plus we all also went to JUCOs and public in-state 4 year universities. I also got a full ride scholarship so that helped my parents even more. Since they didn't use my college money they bought me a new car with it when I graduated.

I just looked up the cost for in-state tuition at the local JUCO then at Auburn University, which is located where I live as well. JUCO tuition is $3600 per year and Auburn is $9800 per year. This doesn't include books, rent, etc, but it is still manageable and doesn't require $50-100k in student loans to pay for.

I worked 3 nights a week in a bar while I was in nursing school and paid all my expenses. It ain't that hard.
